“Toads are capable of sarcasm, but their blood runs too cold for hysteria.”

Thornhedge by T Kingfisher

December 25, 2025 by Nart Leave a Comment

A fairy tale novella by T Kingfisher. Plot: Toadling is a hideous toad that lives in a forest cloaked with a spell to keep people out. Her job is to protect the forest and its secrets from the odd knight and adventurer that might try to break through, hoping to find riches and glory. It has been a long, long time since anyone has tried to come, but one day, sure enough, another knight comes through. Having nothing left to lose though, the knight is […]

“the history and present of tuberculosis reveal the folly and brilliance and cruelty and compassion of humans.

Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green

December 25, 2025 by Nart Leave a Comment

Maybe not everything, but a surprising amount for sure. Green is entirely right that I don’t give much thought to tuberculosis. It feels like a historical disease, like scurvy. But of course, tuberculosis is still enormously pervasive in certain parts of the world. It’s interesting to me that he focuses on the way the disease is ravaging parts of Africa when even within North America there are communities being affected. For example, here in Canada, of the 23.8% of cases of tuberculosis that manifest in […]

Rebel Rising by Rebel Wilson

December 25, 2025 by ASKReviews 1 Comment

Best for: Fans of the actress who don’t mind a lot of unnecessary name dropping. In a nutshell: Actor Rebel Wilson shares her story, from her upbringing in Australia, through her time as an actress and welcoming her first child. Worth quoting: N/A Why I chose it: I do love the Pitch Perfect films, and I love a good memoir read by the author. I’ve hesitated reading it because I don’t know much about Wilson, and I kind of wish I’d trusted that instinct. Review: […]

“There’s an old saying about stories, and how there are always three versions of them: yours, mine, and the truth.”

Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry

December 24, 2025 by Nart Leave a Comment

Plot: two reporters, one in need of an opportunity to prove her muster, one in need of proving that he’s not a one hit wonder, compete for the story of the year. The reclusive daughter of one of the most infamous families of the 20th century is apparently finally ready to tell her side of the story, and it’s a doozey. All they have to do is keep out of each other’s way and impress her more than the other person. But something’s not adding […]

When Grumpy Met Sunshine by Charlotte Stein

December 24, 2025 by Nart 2 Comments

Describing this as Roy Kent gets his happy ending feels both too shallow, but also too accurate not to use. Plot: Roy-ahem-Alfie is a retired footballer known for being a foul-mouthed, rude, aggressive (and exceptional) player. He has somehow been maneuvered into agreeing to “write” a memoir, since everyone wants inside the mind of the famously private man. Of course, he’s a big dumb dumb, so he needs a ghost writer, and “human cupcake” Mabel is absolutely the wrong person for the job. But also, […]

Smut at its finest: Lights Out

Lights Out by Navessa Allen

December 24, 2025 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

Lights Out was smut at its finest. A trauma ER nurse crushes on a sexy masked man via social media. She dares him to dirty things to her, never expecting anything. It was fantasy to blow off steam after work…until things get very, very real. MILD SPOILERS  Josh (the masked man) comes across Aly’s (the nurse) spicy comment and realizes he might know her IRL. It starts with some mild stalking, but ramps up over the course of the story. Josh is a shut-in and […]
