The boldly feminist historical romance you need

The Rakess by Scarlett Peckham

Portrait of a Duchess by Scarlett Peckham

March 10, 2023 by Owlizabeth 3 Comments

The second installment in Scarlett Peckham’s Society of Sirens came out this week!! And it was excellent!! And I think everyone should read this series!! I would love to leave this there, but there’s this word count I’m supposed to hit for this to count, so I suppose I’ll give y’all a little more. This series is about “fallen” women who have decided to accept, embrace, and use their tarnished reputations to improve the situation for all women. The heroine of the first, the Rakess […]

The Serial Killer Book I’ve Been Waiting For

Notes On An Execution by Danya Kukafka

February 22, 2023 by Owlizabeth 1 Comment

I went in to this book so wary! I’m not a huge fan of serial killers or the true crime mania that glorifies men who murder (mostly) women. So even though I’d seen glowing review after breathless recommendation of Notes On an Execution, I doubted I’d get past 20%. I am never so pleased to be wrong than when it comes to loving an unexpected book. The premise of this one is simple, it is the day of Ansel Power’s execution. There are brief chapters […]

I Think It’s Me

Shrines of Gaiety by Kate Atkinson

February 17, 2023 by Owlizabeth 1 Comment

This review has been difficult to write because this book was good but I didn’t like it. I’m much better when I definitely love or definitely hate something! And this was just…frustrating for me. The story is set over about a week’s time in 1926 London, following a pair of girls who have runaway from York to become stars and inevitably get swallowed in the nightclub scene. And also the ex-field nurse turned librarian who goes to find them. And also the notorious nightclub owner. […]

We Should Have Seen It Coming

Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel

February 7, 2023 by Owlizabeth Leave a Comment

I am a mood reader prone to slumps and I also rely on my public library (and four additional in-state systems who have reciprocal relationships with my county – libraries are a miracle and you should support yours more) so I don’t always get to read the hot new book when it is hot and new. I know this was the big book around here last year, I read the stats post. So I doubt I’m adding anything new to the conversation here when I […]

Kathryn Moon’s Sweetverse

Baby and the Late Night Howlers by Kathryn Moon

Lola and the Millionaires parts I & II by Kathryn Moon

Bad Alpha by Kathryn Moon

Faith and the Dead End Devils by Kathryn Moon

January 27, 2023 by Owlizabeth 11 Comments

I’m excited about writing this because none of y’all know me! These are the books I comfort reread with a disturbing regularity, and they are the sweetest, filthiest Why Choose/ABO romances out there. I just finished a buddy read with some romancelandia friends and I gotta share em with y’all as well. (Because I know none of you are my mother) First – what is Why Choose and what is ABO? Why Choose is the new term for Reverse Harem, which in romance books involves […]

The Cartographers (DNF)

The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd

January 17, 2023 by Owlizabeth Leave a Comment

I come from the review school of “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all” and so generally avoid sharing my did not finish (DNFs) books. I’m a mood reader! Taste is subjective! Don’t yuck someone else’s yum! I’ve set books aside thinking I hate them and picked them up months later and fallen absolutely in love! So, yeah, this is very strange and uncomfortable for me, but this book made me so angry I have to share. Basic synopsis: […]
