Not Everything Makes The List

My Brother Has Autism by Deborah Woo-Ming

Some Kids Have Autism by Martha E.H. Rustad

July 3, 2021 by NTE Leave a Comment

So: I’m cycling through a lot of disability rep books this month, since it’s Disability Pride Month and since I am continuing to work on lists of resources for books with/by/for/about disabled people, lives, histories, & characters. I have so many books to investigate, and I’m going through a bunch of them to see if they’re worth adding them as resources, and it’s really important to note that not everything makes the list. Just because a book has disabled main characters does not mean it is […]

Meet The Overs & The Unders: An Activity Book to Help Children Understand Their Sensory Needs by Jackie Brown

July 3, 2021 by NTE Leave a Comment

This is a really good, simply written introduction to sensory issues and needs. Great explanation of what Over & Under responsive to sensory input means & entails. Gives kids a chance to figure out where they fit for each specific system – Vestibular, Visual, Auditory, Tactile, Olfactory, Gustatory, Proprioceptive, & Interoceptive – and plenty of examples of how an Over/Under feels in each situation. I do wish it had some strategies for how to best accommodate these kinds of needs in different situations, but I […]

“Oh my God. My fantasy crush is a gynecologist. My gynecologist.”

Wrong by Jana Aston

June 30, 2021 by NTE 8 Comments

That’s it: that title is the whole book.  Um.  I just… this book.  I don’t even know? Hot guy comes into a girl’s work for coffee all the time. She gets a crush on him.  Then she goes to the gynecologist, and guess what? or more Guess who? “I can reschedule you with another clinic doctor if you’re not comfortable, Sophie.” I’m not comfortable but I blurt out, “I’m fine!” Admitting I’m uncomfortable would be even more uncomfortable. See: That’s pretty relatable, because how do […]

HEAs are for Everybody. EveryBODY.

Plane Love by Avery Kingston

June 30, 2021 by NTE 3 Comments

Lainey is terrified of flying.  So she imbibes a little bit of liquid courage before she climbs aboard the flight to her older brother’s destination wedding.  Xavier has a reason to be afraid of flying – he was injured in a training jump from an airplane back when he was in the military, resulting in him being paralyzed – but that’s a fear he conquers every day at his ‘let’s jump out of planes for fun’ job.  Instead, he’s more nervous about the cute, drunk girl […]

Pandemic-Era Picture Books

And The People Stayed Home by Kitty O'Meara

Lucy's Mask by Lisa Sirkis Thompson

While We Can't Hug by Eoin McLaughlin & Polly Dunbar

May 23, 2021 by NTE Leave a Comment

Do other families have birthday seasons?  In my family, we have three main birthday seasons: From September to early November; from the last day of November through the first week of February; and from May 2nd to June 6th.  When I was a kid, we only had the one –  November through early February: The time period in which all of my five siblings, both of my parents, most of my aunts and uncles, and several cousins were born.  I was all the way out […]

When Kindle Unlimited does you wrong

An Arranged Marriage by Jo Beverly

An Unwilling Bride by Jo Beverly

Christmas Angel by Jo Beverly

Forbidden by Jo Beverly

Dangerous Joy by Jo Beverly

April 22, 2021 by NTE 1 Comment

One of my least favorite things is when the first book of a series is on Kindle Unlimited, but then the rest of the book is not. It just feels like false advertising, because I pay for Kindle Unlimited, so it’s not like I was stealing the first book, but now I have to pay more for all the other books, if I liked that first one, and it just feels unfair.  (I am sure there’s some really good reason for this that I do not understand, most […]
