The racing striped and helmeted tortoise

Hurry, Little Tortoise, Time for School by Carrie Finison

June 22, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am not always a fan of “the turtle or tortoise or snail comes in last because they are slow” stories.  (I still cringe at the end scene in Monsters University where the snail-monster-student gets to class after the year has ended.) Now, I do not necessarily want them to be first, (Tortoise and the Hair is great, just not all the time), I want to see other animals have the distinction of being last, or the slow one. I mean, we all have a […]

So many characters die in this book!

For Your Own Good by Samantha Downing

March 29, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This is one of those books that I randomly saw on the list of available mystery / suspense / thriller audiobooks list at my library.  I usually just search for audiobooks that are in English, “Available now”, and fall into the horror, mystery, suspense, or thriller categories.  Those are my preferred genres of books.  I’ll also throw in some science fiction, but that’s neither here nor there.  Sometimes I feel like I get on a streak of crappy or boring books with this random approach […]

I mean, 95% Over… that explains a lot.

Meet The Overs & The Unders: An Activity Book to Help Children Understand Their Sensory Needs by Jackie Brown

July 3, 2021 by NTE Leave a Comment

This is a really good, simply written introduction to sensory issues and needs. Great explanation of what Over & Under responsive to sensory input means & entails. Gives kids a chance to figure out where they fit for each specific system – Vestibular, Visual, Auditory, Tactile, Olfactory, Gustatory, Proprioceptive, & Interoceptive – and plenty of examples of how an Over/Under feels in each situation. I do wish it had some strategies for how to best accommodate these kinds of needs in different situations, but I […]

Poetry and dogs and cats and wheelbarrows oh my

Love That Dog by Sharon Creech

Hate That Cat by Sharon Creech

March 30, 2021 by BlackRaven 5 Comments

When I first came to work at the bookstore one of my coworkers had been in the business for several years (but not at “our” store) and one author he liked was Sharon Creech. I would read a few of her books because of his recommendation and the new one that had just come out. But I realized she was an author that wrote books you “liked or not” that book but not necessarily a “like or not” the actual author kind of author. I […]

Shirley Chisholm, Unbought and Unbossed

Shirley Chisholm is a Verb! by Veronica Chambers

February 22, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was afraid that Shirley Chisholm is a Verb! was going to be a bit on the preachy side. It looked “in your face” for some reason. Therefore, I was almost not going to pick it up. Because with a preconceived notion that like, I was not sure I could be objective. Yet, that blue cover kept calling me. And I am glad I listened. Veronica Chambers created a nice book about a pioneer for rights for all. She wanted women, women of color and […]

Obviously, this book is not for everyone

Rescuing Mrs. Birdley by Aaron Reynolds

January 22, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I either started and never finished Rescuing Mrs. Birdley or I have read it before. However, if it is a reread, I do not remember reading it the first time. This picture book review is as if this is the first and only time, I have read it. Our “animal expert” (solely by her word only) Miranda sees her teacher in the grocery store. Not unusual. I still run into former educators all over town. However, Miranda has the misunderstanding of what a teachers “natural […]
