Jenny S's Reviews:

You’ll Never Look at Clouds the Same Way Again

August 22, 2015 by Jenny S 1 Comment

Neil Gaiman did not steer me wrong. I hadn’t heard of this book until I pulled it off the library shelf, but Gaiman’s gushing praise for Maria Dahvana Headley on the front cover made me decide to give it a try. Luckily, the day I brought it home, another CBR-er reviewed it so I knew I wasn’t in for a train wreck. I have to say it was fun to read a YA fantasy novel that didn’t involve dystopian futures, but instead created a fascinating […]

If “Waiting for Godot” were written by T.H. White

August 9, 2015 by Jenny S Leave a Comment

This novel did not benefit by the way I read it—in fits and starts over the last few weeks. It has a dreamy and fantastic tone, but I just couldn’t get emotionally invested in it. As a result, it felt more “sloggy” to me than I would have liked. There are parts of it that I found intriguing, but mostly I felt like I was reading a variation on Waiting for Godot—people talking and talking and waiting for something that never seems to come. Ishiguro […]

Reading Like a Teenager

August 5, 2015 by Jenny S 2 Comments

I wish I hadn’t waited so long to get to this review because my response has moved from the emotional to the more intellectual (or at least, less emotional). Jandy Nelson’s novel reminds me of being a teenager—a fast-paced welter of feelings and thoughts, often confusing, but just experienced so strongly and passionately. So here’s the basic set up. Jude and Noah are thirteen year old twins who are both very distinct personalities but also have a strong bond with each other. Noah loves art, […]

Some Day They Will Just Be Superheroes

July 23, 2015 by Jenny S 1 Comment

I’m a newbie to the Captain Marvel universe (if not the Marvel universe) but I had been intrigued by the description of Ms. Marvel—a Pakistani-American girl acquiring super powers and was curious to see how it played out. I was not disappointed. Kamala Khan is a typical American girl, living in Jersey City, reading superhero fan fic, and feeling the pull of two cultures—her immigrant parents with their high expectations and strict rules and the teenage world of boys and parties and what she sees as […]

If Henning Mankell were French

July 23, 2015 by Jenny S 2 Comments

Back in 2007 when I first went on Goodreads, I remember putting a Fred Vargas novel, Wash This Blood Clean from My Hand, on my to-read list. I think it was a recommendation through Powell’s Daily Dose, an e-mail I still look forward to every day. Though the novel sounded great, I had a lot of trouble tracking it down through my local library so it ended up being buried under the massive number of to-read books that followed (887 at last look!). It was […]

If You Liked Dr. Horrible, You’ll Like This

July 14, 2015 by Jenny S 3 Comments

I heard Noelle Stevenson on NPR’s All Things Considered a few months back talking about this book and about being a woman who loves comics and that made me interested in tracking down Nimona. It did not disappoint. I enjoyed this tale of a supervillian, Lord Ballister Blackheart, who has his world thrown upside down by the arrival of a young woman, Nimona, who wants to be his sidekick and help him improve his image. Nimona is a shape shifter but she also has lots […]
