I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Three Stories of Motherly Love in Unbearable Conditions

April 3, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I ended up going to Krakow, Poland for Easter weekend, and while I was debating whether visiting Auschwitz would be crass or an important educational moment, I decided it might not be bad to read a book related to the Holocaust in preparation for the trip.  I didn’t actually finish this until after my visit to Auschwitz but I appreciated having a personal story to attach to the victims since at some point the brain stops processing the scale of large numbers. The book follows […]

Dance, dance and these are the lives you love to lead

April 3, 2018 by Jen K 2 Comments

And Verity is back! Dominic and Verity have completed their cross-country road trip after leaving Manhattan to avoid any further Covenant activity with time for a quickie wedding stop in Vegas, and are back at Verity’s family compound in Oregon. They aren’t home for long before Verity gets an email from the producer of Dance or Die, the reality TV competition she participated in, and upon calling, she is invited back for reunion season that would involve the top 4 from the first five seasons.  […]

Monsters in a Land Down Under

April 3, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Overall, I would say this one is probably my least favorite of the InCryptid series so far but is still an entertaining ride.  Sometimes when an author does novels from different perspectives, it’s hard not to treat the first narrator as a favorite, even if the other characters are also interesting (definitely had that issue with Women of the Otherworld and Elena, though Eve and Jaime Vegas  both gave her a good run for her money – unfortunately Jamie only got the one perspective novel). […]

If Cats Could Talk …

April 3, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

When CatOnMyHead mentioned that this novel was narrated from the cat’s perspective, I knew I was going to end up reading it sooner or later. Boo, the cat in question, has always thought of the mother of the family has her person while the two teenagers, father and new baby were simply extras, or in the worst cases, competition for Mother’s attention.  As a result, the cat is at a loss when Mother disappears. Since Boo can’t ask, and the humans are not talking to […]

Sadly, Thor Does Not Make An Appearance

April 3, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I’m not sure who is deciding on the titles for these novels, but I was incredibly disappointed that this one didn’t involve creatures from Norse mythology given the use of the word Ragnarok! I know there are some giant snakes in Norse mythology but the ones in this book all seem to be of Greek origin. In this novel, McGuire shifts focus from Verity Price to her older brother Alex, who is running a hidden basilisk breeding program at a zoo in Columbus, Ohio.  Up […]

I wanted to like it …

April 3, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I didn’t read this one immediately after downloading it, so when the novel didn’t initially click for me, I blamed myself for forgetting that the main character was 12.  I had been thinking of it as a YA novel, but with the ages being around 12, it isn’t quite YA, which of course leads to slightly misaligned expectations.  “Oh,” I thought, “when they meant it’s like Harry Potter, they didn’t just mean magic, they meant age-wise, too.” However, when the novel continued to not quite […]
