I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Round 2 at the Boarding Home With Lots of Rules

Angel in a Devil's Arms by Julie Anne Long

December 29, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Angelique Breedlove and her business partner Delilah were on the brink of having to give up on their boarding house when an agent came in and rented their best room for his client for his convenience.  All of the previous novel occurred without their mystery guest, but now he is here. Lucien Durand, Viscount Bolt, has returned to London after years abroad.  In fact, most of society thought he had died, drowning in the Thames a decade before after a night of drinking.  Turns out, […]

An Entertaining But Forgettable Mystery

The Weight of Lies by Emily Carpenter

December 29, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Meg Ashley is the daughter of famous novelist Frances Ashley.  The anniversary of the horror novel that made her name is coming up and someone makes Meg an offer to write a book of her own – a tell all memoir about growing up with her famous yet distant mother.  As part of it, the publisher would want her to go to the island that started it all – the resort where Frances Ashley worked for the summer, and then based her first novel on […]

More Consequences for Apollo

Tyrant's Tomb by Rick Riordan

December 29, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I admit, I haven’t been paying that much attention to how long this series is intended to be so I thought this might be the conclusion given that the novel was about an upcoming attack on the Roman camp but halfway through Riordan mentioned a few other foes that hadn’t been entirely defeated yet, so there is more to come after this one.  As much as I like Riordan, I am also kind of ready for this one to wrap up but let’s be honest, […]

Murder Mystery as a Family Study

The Lost Man by Jane Harper

December 29, 2019 by Jen K 1 Comment

While Jane Harper’s previous two novels have followed the same investigator, Falk, this is a stand alone novel about a family of ranchers in the Outback.  Nathan Bright, Cameron and Bub Bright are three brothers, and Cameron now runs the old family homestead with Bub’s help. Nate left when he got married and tried to make it on his own land but it has been tough going – he’s divorced, only sees his son for the holidays, and his numbers are in the red. Nate […]

Prepping for the next HBO show

The Outsider by Stephen King

December 28, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I missed this one when it originally came out because I had heard there was a connection to the Bill Hodges trilogy and I hadn’t read the final two yet.  The connection doesn’t happen until more than halfway through and involves one of the characters helping with an investigation while also alluding to the final fate of some of the other characters.  In other words, it doesn’t have major plot spoilers for the trilogy so it’s really just a personal preference thing for other readers. […]

Shared Family Trauma

Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane

December 28, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Ask Again, Yes spans over four decades, and tells the story of two families, and how their lives have become tied together.  It starts when the two fathers are rookie cops together on the force, though even from this very beginning, they have very different personalities.  Francis Gleeson and Brian Stanhope are both beginning their careers in the force in the early 1970s, both are about to get married and start families, and as a result, it is not a surprise that both soon find […]
