I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Dance with a side of criminal profiling

The Spectacular by Fiona Davis

January 7, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Fiona Davis can always be relied upon to create a good story focused on historically inspired events and buildings set in New York. This one was a little bit different since both of the time lines focused on the same person, Marion Brooks, just about 36 years apart. Most of the other novels of hers I have read have had a larger gap in time and the person in the more recent time line is trying to figure out the mystery while the reader knows […]

Jumping on the bandwagon

Bride by Ali Hazelwood

January 2, 2025 by Jen K 3 Comments

This was my first Ali Hazelwood. I had heard her first few novels were basically Kylo-Ren fanfic and had very little interest in that but figured maybe this would be different enough to be a good entry point. Overall, I did enjoy it and think it was a fun read even if I have oh so many nitpicks. Misery was, for the most part, an enjoyable and likable character, and generally smart even while being completely oblivious and clueless about other things. I think the […]

And what did you lose?

The Lost by Sarah Beth Durst

January 2, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I thought this was a stand alone novel and it is and it isn’t … from what I saw on a Goodreads review, Durst actually wrote this as a trilogy and the follow up novels are even written but due to some corporate acquisitions and mergers, the new publisher chose not to proceed with the series. Fortunately, I feel like it ends less on a cliff hanger as much as an ambiguous ending in that lets you assume what happens next. As a fan of […]

And this is how the end begins

Countdown by Mira Grant

January 2, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This is one of many novellas that Mira Grant (also known as Seanan McGuire) has written to flesh out her Newsflesh trilogy – or her version of a zombie apocalypse. As a result, I would definitely not recommend this as the entry point even though this is chronologically first and goes back to the very beginning, explaining the circumstances that led to the beginning of The Rising. She had already introduced these ideas in the main trilogy but here goes into the details, introduces the […]

The Women by Kristin Hannah

August 23, 2024 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I have never actually read any Kristin Hannah before but this was the selection for the month for a book club I am in – I know The Nightingale was very popular at one point but I think I just hit the point of wondering how many more World War II novels we needed right around the time it came out? But I also get the the appeal – because World War II, at least from an American perspective, is one that is easy to […]

The Sicilian Inheritance by Jo Piazza

June 26, 2024 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This was a book club selection for me – while it definitely is the kind of thing I enjoy (hello, Kate Morton novels), this one wouldn’t have been on my radar at all. The novel alternates chapters between Sara, a chef in Philadelphia with a failed restaurant and a failed marriage, and her great-grandmother Serafina, a young mother in early 20th century Sicily (spanning 1908-1925 to be exact). Sara’s beloved great-aunt Rosie has died and part of her last will is to send Sara off […]
