I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Jen K's Reviews:

Paradox Trilogy

Starts off with a Firefly like crew and quickly becomes something entirely different

Honor’s Knight by Rachel Bach

Fortune’s Pawn by Rachel Bach

Heaven’s Queen by Rachel Bach

February 10, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I would say that I enjoyed the series overall but I also think the first one was the most fun. There were a few lines in the first book that I thought would lead in a certain direction and I either completely misread them, or the author decided she already had enough to resolve without adding that into the equation so dropped that potential plot point. The second book adds quite a bit of complexity to the alliances of the world. With a main character […]

Overthinking a Celebrity Chef Memoir

Be Ready When the Luck Happens by Ina Garten

February 10, 2025 by Jen K 2 Comments

I have always watched a lot of TV and movies but due to various circumstances, there have been many times in my lives where I didn’t have cable. First I was overseas and relied on DVDs to binge all the popular series, then Netflix became popular and networks like ABC and The CW all had their own apps so I could watch the last 5 episodes of the shows I was currently into. In other words, I have never really watched channels like The Food […]

Justice, rage, vengeance

They Never Learn by Layne Fargo

February 10, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I remember when I originally saw the trailer for Promising Young Woman – from that first teaser, it looked like something in the spirit of Hard Candy except that the protagonist was now an adult and punishing men for transgressions. And then I saw a spoiler thread of “this movie is not what you think” and after reading the actual plot, immediately lost interest. I still haven’t seen it or Saltburn. This book, on the other hand, is exactly what I wanted that movie to […]

Don’t you know there’s a war on?

Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros

January 26, 2025 by Jen K 4 Comments

This book very much suffers from middle book syndrome. This is supposed to be a five book series but I’m not sure Yarros has enough story for it, so this is a lot of filler. One issue is that Yarros isn’t necessarily a good enough author to write entertaining filler. Fourth Wing was incredibly derivative of so many other fantasy novels and tropes but it was also action packed, with fun characters, and there was fun world building. It was just a highly readable page turner. […]

This one’s for the birds

The Ornithologist’s Field Guide to Love by India Holton

January 20, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Stupid Dungeon Crawler Carl books! Ever since I finished them, I have been struggling to find a book that really sucks me in. I have read decent novels since then even, but nothing has absorbed me as much or felt as “un-put-downable” since. This novel is another like that – cute, whimsical, not at all serious, and pleasant to read but it’s not the kind of novel that has me staying up past my bedtime to keep reading. As the magical birds might give away, […]

Unhappy families …

The Dutch House by Anne Patchett

January 18, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This was a selection for one of my book clubs – even though this isn’t the kind of novel I tend to gravitate towards, I was the one that added “something by Anne Patchett” to our list of potential book club reads because she owns a local book store. Another person then mentioned this one as being on her TBR, so the decision was made. I have heard that the audiobook is worth a listen because Tom Hanks narrates it. I enjoy audiobooks but often […]
