I have to preface this review by saying that Daredevil is on my Mount Rushmore of comic characters. He’s my guy. By day I’m an attorney and a person of faith, so I’m really into Matt Murdock’s worldview and how he wrestles with the balance of law, God, and justice. (If anyone cares, my other favorites are Moon Knight, Batman, and Booster Gold.) In a recent discussion of Netflix’ Daredevil series, someone online recently nudged me to Frank Miller’s Born Again, which collects a story arc […]
Get out of My Dreams and into My Kindle
I wanted to love this book. Dreaming is weird and interesting. I wanted to try and make sense of recurring or common dreams that I had, learn how to retain memory of more of my nightly dreams, and try lucid dreaming. This book had good reviews, so I gave it a go as a way to help me make my dream dreams come true. While this book does have some good information, it feels more like a “get rich quick by gaming Kindle Unlimited” book than a reliable […]
Kickin it on Deathworld
Last year on Pajiba and/or CBR, I asked for fun sci-fi recommendations. Harry Harrison’s Bill, the Galactic Hero series was recommended by more than a couple folks. A quick “Harry Harrison” search on my Kindle revealed this book, instead of Bill. This book was free, so I downloaded it and soaked it up. Deathworld, despite the name, is a fun and thoughtful work of science fiction from the man who brought us Soylent Green. It combines the things that I love most about sci-fi: entertainment, […]
“This may seem odd, but that is not my fault.”
A decade ago I read an interesting piece of non-fiction: Howards Marks is a charming Welsh author and (former) drug dealer. He wrote a book about his drug-related exploits called Mr. Nice. Interestingly enough, he began selling drugs while attending Oxford and studying philosophy. At one point, he makes an aside comment, a la Good Will Hunting, that you can learn more from some library book than you often can from the fabled halls of academia. Marks’ recommendation of Bertrand Russell’s expansive yet accessible The History […]
Bad Feet
Dancer is a trade paperback collection of Nate Edmondson’s five part series of the same name. It was published by Image in 2012. In the first chapter, a grizzled old American and his Irish ballerina girlfriend are chased by police and an assassin. The assassin, it turns out, looks an awfully lot like the grizzled old American. On paper, Dancer sounds like a fantastic book. Image has been on fire, lately, Edmondson is working on major books like Punisher and Black Widow, and the premise is […]
The Colt 45 of Space Comics
As previously mentioned in my Agent of the Empire reviews, I’m not much of a Star Wars guy, but I do enjoy the universe. It lends itself to telling all kinds of stories. For example, Agent of the Empire (Dark Horse) used a galaxy far, far away to tell James Bond stories well. Charles Soule’s (She-Hulk, Letter 44, Superman Wonderwoman etc. etc. etc.) Lando is another great example of how the larger Star Wars ‘verse can be used to tell smaller, genre-ish stories. This is […]
