Queen Demon by Martha Wells

I struggled, but it’s still a Martha Wells book

Queen Demon by Martha Wells

October 6, 2025 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

When I read and reviewed Witch King in 2023, I was hoping there would be more books in Kaiisteron’s story. I got my wish, but I flailed around for a while before I was able to sink into it. First, I realized that I needed to reread Witch King. Next, I needed to recalibrate. In a lot of fantasy series, there’s a person or entity that is the ultimate antagonist. In The Rising World series, I think the antagonist is a kind of power. I […]

Cover of Charlotte Stein’s Dealing With a Desperate Demon

A Very Horny Ode to Kindness

Dealing With a Desperate Demon by Charlotte Stein

October 6, 2025 by Emmalita 3 Comments

While I was reading Charlotte Stein’s Dealing with a Desperate Demon, I had a few conversations about the way unkindness is being rewarded socially and politically and how we combat that. And then I would dive back into Desperate Demon and feel wrapped in kindness again. This book is about being kind, being soft, and because it’s a Charlotte Stein romance, being very horny. When Nancy was a child, she wrote stories and things happened. Her father hated the stories she wrote and the things […]

F*cked Up Fairy Tales by Liz Gotauco

September 28, 2025 by Emmalita 2 Comments

When Liz Gotauco (aka cosbrarian) announced last year that her F*cked Up Fairytales with Liz video series was coming to us in book form, I got very excited. When the arc showed up on NetGalley, I smashed the request button hard. When the e-arc showed up on my kindle, I started to read it very slowly, because in 2025, joy should be savored. F*cked Up Fairytales: Sinful Cinderellas, Prince Alarmings and Other Timeless Classics is everything I hoped it would be. F*cked Up Fairy Tales […]

Cover of Alexandra Vasti’s Ladies in Hating

As she watched, a single dark red petal broke free from the vine just above the plaque and floated, strange and slow, all the way to the ground.

Ladies in Hating by Alexandra Vasti

September 18, 2025 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

After reading Charlie Jane Anders’s Lessons in Magic and Disaster last month, I particularly enjoyed reading about two women writing books and falling in love in Georgian England. In Lessons, Jamie was researching magic and queer subtext in a fictional novel written by real 18th century woman, Sarah Fielding. In Ladies in Hating, Georgiana and Catriona are each authors of gothic books under pseudonyms. It is still scandalous for a woman to be an author, especially of gothic literature, though Georgiana’s identity is somewhat of […]

If Jane Austen had taught Naomi Moreno anything, it was to watch out for the George Wickhams of the World.

The Wedding Con by Janine Amesta

September 11, 2025 by Emmalita 2 Comments

If you haven’t yet tried one of Janine Amesta’s books, I would compare her to Kate Clayborn and Tarah Dewitt – small town, contemporary romances written with tremendous emotional intelligence, medium spice, and big yearning. If you are looking for an excuse to pick up one of her books, Hispanic Heritage Month runs September 15 – October 15 and she is a Latine author. I was describing Janine Amesta’s The Wedding Con to another romance reading friend who interrupted and asked, so this is a […]

Cannonball Read 17 Bingo: The Second Check-in

September 10, 2025 by Emmalita 11 Comments

Welcome to the second Bingo check-in! We are just past the halfway point, so there is still lots of time to play. The card, square descriptions, and rules can be found here. I know I say this every year, but my favorite thing about Bingo is the books you choose to fit the squares. This year you all continue to choose books that are interesting, fun, and challenging, whether you like them or not. I am reading all of your reviews. Rather than a prayer, I […]
