The Moment I Fell in Love (with a series)

Dead Witch Walking; The Good, The Bad, and The Undead; Every Witch Way but Dead by Kim Harrison

October 28, 2014 by Emmalita 12 Comments

I love paranormal and urban fantasy.  No matter how many times I get burned I keep going back to the well.  I will even keep going with a series until I reach a point of self loathing – please see last year’s review of this series.  Kim Harrison’s The Hollows series came recommended by the lovely Malin, and when Malin makes a recommendation, you should at least give it a try. Malin’s recommendation came shortly before the final book of the series was published. I […]

Revisting a teen favorite

The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley

August 26, 2014 by Emmalita 2 Comments

I read and re-read The Blue Sword (1982) a thousand times as a teen. There weren’t many books for teens with a sword wielding female protagonist. I lost track of the book at some point and forgot the title and the author. Years later the characters would pop into my head, especially once I started reading fantasy fiction again. I found the book again last year in a Pajiba post. The Blue Sword is a fantasy adventure set in a world with a thinly veiled […]

Just go buy it and read it. That’s all the review you need.

The Suffragette Scandal by Courtney Milan

July 16, 2014 by Emmalita 12 Comments

There’s no need to read my review. Just click on the link and go buy the book.  You will not be sorry. Expectations – mine and the characters: My expectations for this book were high. I was afraid they were unrealistically high. I did my best to check my expectations so that I can just enjoy the story, but I need not have worried. Milan took my expectations, subverted them, and then schooled me on what my expectations should have been.  I don’t feel bad, […]

My heart is in this chocolate, let it make you whole

The Chocolate Rose and The Chocolate Touch by Laura Florand

July 14, 2014 by Emmalita 1 Comment

Laura Florand continues her Amour et Chocolate – pairing men and women who fall in love but don’t know how to communicate the love and acceptance they feel for one another in a way the other understands. Neither The Chocolate Rose nor The Chocolate Touch engage in the magical realism of The Chocolate Kiss, but as in the previous book, our heroes try to communicate their feelings through food.  That is what hooks me with these books – the character’s need to feed the […]

You fed my heart to a dog?

The Chocolate Kiss by Laura Florand

June 30, 2014 by Emmalita 12 Comments

In my last romance review I wrote about how romance novels can return you to the feeling of falling in love.   I stand by that.  But sometimes they can also return you to the feeling of realizing things aren’t going to work out the way you wanted.  It isn’t the fault of the book, it’s what I as a reader bring to this particular table.  I’m not going to go into my personal history (which doesn’t involve Paris, witch craft, or a happy ending), […]

Hey kids, the Denarians are back. Parkour!

Skin Game by Jim Butcher

June 25, 2014 by Emmalita 1 Comment

It’s strange writing a review of Skin Game.  As the 15th book of The Dresden Files it is not the place to start for the new reader, and for the long time Dresden fan, I can’t imagine any review would make any difference.  So I’m writing this review because my other option for celebrating the publication, taking up the sport of parkour, just isn’t an option.   Nicodemus Archleone and the Denarians are my favorite of Harry’s foes.  Nicodemus has inflicted terrible damage on […]
