Cozy fantasy and Sci-fi are my self care reads. I love a good magic system and dragons are always welcome. I like my Sci-fi LGBTQ+ positive. YA and Romance fill a sweet spot. And I never underestimate good children's fiction! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Dome’Loki's Quick Questions interview.)

Dome'Loki's Reviews:

The book, "Dungeon Crawler Carl" lying down in front of a flight of 4 small cider glasses full of colorful cider.

Do you need an adventure filled with laughter and some pathos? Do I have the book for you!

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

January 2, 2025 by Dome'Loki 2 Comments

My husband received  Dungeon Crawler Carl in our family Winter Solstice book exchange.  From the moment he started the book, he was chuckling, and sometimes outright cackling, every several pages.  Before finishing he insisted it be my next read.  Folks, this book is laugh out loud  funny.  Do you like fantasy, adventure, video games, Dungeons and Dragons, The Hunger Games, Running Man or cats?  Does a reference to the anime/manga/movie Battle Royale peak your interest? Are you intrigued by the idea of an AI with a foot […]

A white and black cat sitting up next to the book, "The Phoenix Keeper" by S. A. MacLean.

A fantasy zoo that is a love letter to the importance of conservation

The Phoenix Keeper by S. A. MacLean

December 30, 2024 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

First and very importantly, Thank You CoffeeShopReader!  I thoroughly enjoyed The Phoenix Keeper.  It was a perfect book to close out a year that required lighter reading due to life challenges.  Also there was an added layer of fun as the zoo and location were clearly inspired by San Diego and our world famous zoo. As phoenix keeper at the magical San Tamculo Zoo, Aila is close to achieving a lifelong dream.  Overseeing a breeding pair of critically endangered Silimalo phoenixes and helping to bring them […]

Thank you, CoffeeShopReader!

Thank you for the wonderful package of goodies!  The second half of 2024 has required lighter reading, with romance and cozy vibes.  I’m looking forward to continuing that trend with a YA sapphic romance that features mystical creatures.  The journal is adorable and my puzzle loving 16 year old has already made off with the fidget puzzle.  I look forward to trying the various warm drinks while reading. It also gave me the chance to use a personalized book embosser that I was just gifted:)

The book "Flowerheart" by Catherine Bakewell held in front of pale purple blooming cosmos flowers.

Sweet, Ghibli-esque cottage core fantasy

Flowerheart by Catherine Bakewell

May 27, 2024 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

What: Catherine Bakewell’s Flowerheart is a lovely coming into one’s power tale with Studio Ghibli vibes and a charmingly rustic setting,  It’s also a fairytale with wild magic, curses, witches and wizards.  Running through is the rebuilding of a childhood friendship that turns to romance. Who: Clara Lucas is a witch in training, about to turn sixteen, and afraid of her power.  Her magic surges in wild, and sometimes destructive, ways and is affected by her mood.  On the benign side flowers will spontaneously bloom in her […]

The book, "Fevered Star" by Rebecca Roanhorse held in front of yellow wildflowers.

“We are but fevered stars. Here a little while, bright with promise, before we burn away.”

Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse

May 19, 2024 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

I’ve been struggling with review writing lately and decided to give the 5 Ws way a shot because this book/series is too good to not share. What:  Fevered Star, is the second book in Rebecca Roanhorse’s  Between Earth and Sky series.  The first is Black Sun, which I thoroughly enjoyed!  It is an epic fantasy tale where Gods seek to regain power in the mortal realm and human power players seek to reshape control of the land and seas. Who:  Naranpa, Sun Priest, who has now become […]
