I am a Professional Book Pusher. Reading is a passion, as is writing, bragging about nephews, and alligator wrestling. My first year participating was 2018. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: BlackRaven's Quick Questions interview.)

Black Girl Magic: A Poem

April 18, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Black Girl Magic: A Poem is Browne’s way of responding to the way black girls “should” look and act. Change this to: white girls, fat girls, skinny girls…. any female.  The theme is not exclusive to the population Browne speaks of.  We “should” act a certain way or else society shames you: “Be Different as long as it’s Different like Me” screamed off the page for me. “Society: Be Yourself. NO, not that way…” also is loud and clear. Browne challenges this “should” mentality. […]

Rainbow Magic

April 17, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Best friends Rachel and Kirsty love fall. They want to go apple picking and carve pumpkins and have a hayride. However, this year something is very wrong! It is hotter than summer and nothing is happening as it should! Plants are rotting or not growing at all. The trees are not losing their leaves, making it so there is nothing to rake up and the girls can jump in. When the girls meet Autumn, The Falling Leaves Fairy, they learn why. Jack Frost and the […]

Earth Day and Beyond

April 17, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

With Earth Day, Green Up Day and Spring around the corner (though I am not as sure about Spring due to the current weather conditions) the young readers fancy turns towards books about the earth. And both titles, Water’s Children: Celebrating the Resource That Unites Us All by Angele Delaunois and When Planet Earth Was New by James Gladstone, give a story and facts about the past and present earth, the people there, water as well as many other details. Water’s Children shows us how […]

April 16, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

On a very hot day in the jungle a sudden cool breeze makes an appearance. However, jaguar has something important to do, yet wants to take advantage of the rare treat. He asks the coati to help him by waking him up in 10 minutes. However, the coati also wants to take a siesta…. And the story goes along from there.   The fact the animals of the jungle are shown is a fun learning tool. What is a coati? What is a sloth? The […]

Ozzy the Ostrich

April 16, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

One of the things I dislike about a being a bookseller is when I find a book that I just cannot like. No matter how hard I try, there is nothing I can say “I like this” about it. I know that the author and/or the illustrator puts a piece of themselves into their work. An author wants you to take away a smile at least from their story because you enjoyed it. An illustrator takes the time to create something that they hope accents […]

American Sonnets

April 13, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

What is not to love about a title called: American Sonnets for My Past and Future Assassin? It screams out “I am different” and “Please read me.”  I was excited to dive into the seventy different poems. April is poetry month, so this was the perfect time to start. I then realized that every one of the poems all have the same title (American Sonnets for My Past and Future Assassin). Different, but not impossible, I figured. Ah… I am sorry to say, I am […]
