Married, mom of two, history PhD, feminist. I've been participating in Cannonball Read since CBR4. I love to read, and writing reviews keeps me from reading without thinking. I feel like I owe it to the authors who entertain me to savor their creations. It's like slowing down and enjoying a delicious meal instead of bolting your food. Hobb-a-thon 2026 begins!

Fool’s Errand: The Tawny Man Trilogy Book One by Robin Hobb

January 8, 2026 by ElCicco 1 Comment

My final 6 reviews on CBR17 were Robin Hobb’s The Farseer Trilogy and The Liveship Traders Trilogy and I LOVED THEM. I am fully invested in reading all of her Realm of the Elderlings novels and I am back on track with Book one of The Tawny Man Trilogy — Fool’s Errand. I knew I was going to love it because it features two of my favorite characters: Fitz and the Fool. We first met them in The Farseer Trilogy where their unusual circumstances threw […]

A classical story that has a far too modern feel

I, Medusa: A Novel by Ayana Gray

January 4, 2026 by ElCicco 6 Comments

Trigger warning for grooming and rape NTE was kind enough to send this requested book to me as part of the holiday book exchange. I was very interested in reading it because first of all, I love a retelling of a classic story from a different perspective, and second of all, I am VERY interested in the story of Medusa. If you are familiar with Medusa, perhaps it is from the story of the “hero” Perseus who killed her with help from the gods/goddesses. Medusa […]

Strong start to CBR18!

The Raven Scholar: Eternal Path Trilogy Book 1 by Antonia Hodgson

January 1, 2026 by ElCicco 6 Comments

The Raven Scholar got a lot of great reviews in CBR17 so I downloaded it before the holidays and spent a COVID-filled Christmas reading it — one bright note in a somewhat icky season for my family. I already knew that my CBR18 was going to be filled with fantasy lit due to my new Robin Hobb obsession, but now I can add Antonia Hodgson’s trilogy to the list. I can’t wait to read book 2, whenever that comes out. The world where The Raven […]

Yas, Queens!

Ship of Destiny: The Liveship Traders Book 3 by Robin Hobb

December 17, 2025 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Trigger warning for rape and gaslighting  Well, the Liveship Traders Trilogy was incredibly good! I would have to agree that this trilogy is better than The Farseer Trilogy, and I loved that one. Ship of Destiny tied up important story lines while also leaving the door open to further developments for the main characters later. As ever, Robin Hobb juggles multiple plot lines with ease and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat to the end. I have a new appreciation for certain […]

Thank you, NTE!!!

December 13, 2025 by ElCicco 1 Comment

We are in the midst of a winter snow storm and what should appear on my doorstep but two (!!) books that I can’t wait to read! Thank you, NTE, for the generous and most appreciated gift, and special shout out to Mother Nature for providing the excuse to just stay in and read.

As the worlds turn

Mad Ship: The Liveship Traders Trilogy book 2 by Robin Hobb

December 5, 2025 by ElCicco 1 Comment

Book 2 of this trilogy was an absolute stunner, as my conceptions of certain characters and situations were challenged and changed. Hobb continues to weave multiple complex story lines together and fleshes out her characters in such a way that I am conflicted about whom to root for or even what I am rooting for now. The Liveship Traders Trilogy is about a colonial empire facing rebellion, about a rebellion amongst Old Trader families who do not necessarily agree with each other, about enslaved and […]
