Be warned readers, this is pretty bloody/gory. A couple of scenes did turn my stomach a bit, but I kept plugging through. I won’t lie, readers are not going to like the main character, Poppy Stringer at all. At least at fast. She starts to grow on you, or at least she grew on me the more I read. And the more I read, I kept hoping that she was going to still be standing by the end of the book.
Fabulous Bodies follows single mom Poppy. By day she’s a so-so influencer and by night she’s a grave robber. Poppy has no qualms about what she does to the dead when she has a client in need of a body (and it’s pretty awful by the way), but when a famous singer. Eddie Michaels, she loves dies, Poppy is floored when she’s asked to steal his body. Poppy does it because it’s a ton of money, and is then shocked when Eddie is not dead and needs Poppy for reasons still unknown to her.
Poppy sucks. A lot. When readers first meet her, you get to see her in grave robber mode and her reasons for doing it (for her daughter to have a nice house) is a stretch. But, you start to feel a bit sorry for her when you hear about her upbringing and once she gets in Eddie Michael’s clutches you keep hoping she’s going to survive. Eddie Michaels, Poppy’s daughter, and Poppy’s friend Noah round out most the cast of characters we get some dedicated time with. We do get some secondary and tertiary characters I ended up feeling sorry for during Eddie’s rampage.
The flow of the book goes full throttle after we get to Poppy realizing Eddie Michael’s isn’t dead. The murder scenes start racking up and you start to wonder how much death we are going to get in this book and the answer becomes, oh geez a lot.
The ending was great and I liked how things got resolved and the questions answered. I thought Tingle did a great job of working in the science fiction as well as the horror elements to tell a fast paced story.
