A recent online read (due mid August 2026) was Finding My Spark by Isabelle Jameson, Ann Marie Boulanger (translator), and Sylvain Cabot (illustrator). It is an upbeat and positive coming out story for a trans boy. The publisher description says it is a middle grade read but the picture book format might be a turnoff for that age. Yet, it could work as a read-aloud in the classroom or siblings dealing with a sibling or classmate’s transition.
Due to the translation there were some bumps with the flow of the story. And the illustrations also have a few bumps as I assumed all the kids were girls, except for the youngest child, yet he says now he has two big brothers. This is probably due to the fact that the colors are really good, but nothing follows a stereotypical pattern of a binary “male” or “female”. It keeps with the theme, but can take away from a smooth read. The details are also not always clean-cut. Yet, that does make things have an overall tone that is not necessarily a negative experience. In fact, I would read a full graphic novel for middle school readers or teens with them.
No real surprises happen with the protagonist. He experiences the thoughts and feelings that have been presented in other books about trans children. But if it is your first time reading a book about this subject it is a good introduction. Perhaps things are a bit idealistic, as there are no real hurdles he has to overcome, but then again, that is good as you don’t want children to assume it will be a bad experience, or the non-transitioning person should do certain things as it is “expected” in a “right way” to accept this transition.
