Dragon vs. Unicorn: Friends or Frenemies? by P.J. Hoover and Lisa Wiley (illustrator) might be, if not the first, one of the first or few Choose Your Own Adventures books I have read via an online reader (though it is currently available). Online reading of a CYOA is not an easy task, unlike this book which is a quick read for the adult and a decent read for the at least five and up (around a young nine) crowd.
Unicorn and Dragon are two friends who are opposites with their personalities, but who also like some of the same things. It is when they don’t agree, that is when the choices need to be made by you, the reader. These situations range from: Do they sleep in the game room or Dragon’s dark cave? Do they build their plain sturdy clubhouse or the fancy messy one? Do they have a sign that says No Trespassers or No T-Rexes inside the tent, cupcakes will be provided outside?
Everything is minimal text and minimalistic bold illustrations that really give most of the story action and illustrate fun and cute stories that we know from other stories (such as friendship issues, sleepovers, and feelings) that are silly and relatable. I only read a few choices, but it was cozy to read. Things usually work out well enough, and you are always able to start over if you do not like how things ended up. According to the publisher’s description, there are three separate stories each dealing with their own subject and solutions.
