Sometimes sequels and companion books do not always hit as well as the first book of a series or collection by an author for me. The Knight Owl books are good and I like them, but the second book was not as good as the first. I am not jumping up and down and saying they are my favorite books, but I like recommending them and on occasion reading them again. Therefore, these are exceptions to that comment. And one day, while browsing potential online reader copies of books, I found a new story by Christopher Denise. It is called Knight Owl’s Little Christmas. I have been looking for a good non-religious or non-Santa book, so I gave it a shot.
It is currently available, so I am not sure how small the book is, but the online reader copy did make things feel they might not be a traditional book size. With that being said, it does not matter. The book itself is still good. It is a cute story with fun illustrations (I love the dragons sledding and the Christmas tree decorations). It is sweet, a little funny, and maybe not a “full fledged action story” but there is enough to keep your interest. It is probably a good Christmas Eve bedtime tale. It is just a book that might not knock your stockings off the chimney, but it will make Santa chuckle as he eats his cookies and milk.
I would say the ages are best for the toddler and up crowd, but really it’s an all ages can enjoy book. It does not require that you know who some of the characters are (Knight Owl and Early Bird) but it does help. You can read the bold, colorful images, then read the text with help, and finally take off on your own soon enough. It is a good read aloud and good for naptime, bedtime, or just a “I need a quiet moment so please have some silent reading time” time.
