How can you not like the rich, jewel colors of Jeffrey Ebbeler’s illustrations in Ten Dragon Eggs: A Book about Counting Down? Okay, sure, they might be too cute. Or maybe they have too big eyes, but they do fit the story that Lynda Graham-Barber made for us. They are sweet, silly and have a cleverness to them.
The story is simple, a dragon mother watches her eggs hatch. It is a difficult process but amusing to the readers. And then, along the way, we count the number of hatchlings. With a fun, adorable little twist at the end. Mid-July 2023 will be here sooner than we think, but I am excited to find the finished product (and therefore, not so patiently waiting) as I read this via online, and as you know, I need the physical book in hand to know all the wonderfulness about them.
In the meantime, I will enjoy the colorful, detailed illustrations via online. I will giggle at the different shapes, sizes, colors, and quirks of the baby dragons. I will feel for the pore mama having to hatch all her eggs. And I will enjoy the story, again, online. I will hunt down other books by the author and illustrator (though Ebbeler is Boo Stew, so I know I enjoy their work already).
The fun part of this book will be that you can multitask it. You can do colors and numbers. You can count to ten and reverse. There will be details in the illustrations to find and much more that will allow you to adapt this book to most ages. Though it probably will start with toddler on up.
