Super Narwhal and Jelly Jolt (A Narwhal and Jelly Book #2) by Ben Clanton is a typical Narwhal and Jelly book. However, Narwhal is not as annoying as they have been in other books. Usually the naivetés of Narwhal borders on the frankly, stupid, and I cannot get pass that “comedy of errors and misunderstandings” (I never thought Abbot and Costello all that amusing) to enjoy the story. This time, even though Narwhal stays true to himself and personality, the story worked much better for me.
Our “heroes find their inner superheroes in three new under-the-sea adventures” (stolen from publisher description). Each story is how Narwhal helps other sea-creatures to find their superhero inside of them. And that is Narwhals superhero power: To help others. And while this story has been done before, this time it is done in a fun, approachable and accessible manner. Mid-early readers will enjoy going along and seeing how Narwhal and Jelly will save the ocean. And, since the three stories are in a chapter format, you could read a story a night, for the younger crowd or to cover reading time requirements.
However, while this time I was enjoying the story, I was still not digging the illustrations, though. These simple, almost child-like illustrations seem rushed and not thought out. But, with that said, I appreciate the effort put into them. I am unable to draw a stick figure; therefore, I know that drawing is not an easy task to tackle. I do wonder if the illustrations were done in a less graphic novel format and in a more realties format, how that would change the feel of the story over all.
