Yes, it’s book six in a series. You can probably go out and read the first five books before reading this one, but since this one takes a turn with a new character, Antimony Price, the youngest member of the Price siblings, you might be able to just read it on its own. Antimony is the younger sister, and the aimless one who has not found a vocation or career, and is still living at home with her parents. But that all changes when her […]
I Feel Like I’m Not Liking the Things Other People are Liking
I found reading this book frustrating. I enjoyed it, and then I’d slam into a sentence or phrase that reminded me the author is a man. I have no inherent problem with male authors and I know men can write women, but this author seems to have had a hard time letting go of the male gaze. It did impact my enjoyment and lowered my star rating. Also lowering my rating were the endless letter/info dumps. I’ve read some other CBR reviews of The Rook, […]
Let’s Do The Time Warp
Who among us has not thought about what we would tell our younger self if we could go back in time? If we’re honest, we acknowledge that our younger self, after getting over disbelief and the resulting freak out, would not listen to a damned thing we had to say. That’s the challenge for Cal Leandros in Nevermore, the tenth installment in Rob Thurman’s urban fantasy series, and it goes about as well as you might expect.
You’re a trickster singular, Rachel Morgan
At last, I have returned to Rachel Morgan and The Hollows. Thanks to Malin, I was able to cruise through the first 11 books of the series. I find marathoning books just isn’t the same as marathoning tv. I become more immersed in the world of books than tv, and then I feel hungover and a little put off. I tried to read The Undead Pool back in February, but I just couldn’t get into it. It was all me though. So I put it […]
You can take the Beast Lord out of the Citadel, but you can’t take the Lord out of the Beast.
First, I would like to thank the lovely Malin for making it possible for me to read Magic Shifts at this time. Yes, I could have waited until I had an extra $13 or until it was available at the library, but that would have been weeks. So thank you, Malin. Second, there will be spoilers for the previous books as well as little spoilers for this one. I don’t know how to write about the series without getting into spoilers. If you haven’t read […]
How do you decide if someone is human? Or, Why I love Urban Fantasy
The Kate Daniels series by husband and wife writing team Ilona Andrews is one of my favorite urban fantasy series. I love reading fantasy, urban fantasy, science fiction and romance. A big part of my love for these genres is their escapist nature. Another reason I love them is the way we can vicariously thrash through difficult social issues. I tend to read several books at a time, and will often re-read beloved books while reading something newer and/or more challenging. Yesterday I picked up […]
