One Ring To Rule Them All…..

The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkien

The Two Towers by JRR Tolkien

The Return of the King by JRR Tolkien

July 23, 2020 by Ale Leave a Comment

My first encounter with the enormous doorstop that is Tolkien’s classic was when I was ten and my dad read it to me as a bedtime story. I blame him, and these books for my obsession with fantasy and the ridiculous amount of Pinterest boards I’ve dedicated to LOTR and Hobbit fan art.  Even so, sitting down to re-read the doorstop is a commitment I’m not usually ready to make, so for a long time, the movies have kept my obsessions alive. But pandemic lock […]

Old Story, New Voices

November 15, 2016 by Ale Leave a Comment

Faintingviolet already did a great review of this glorious audio book, but I’ll try to give it justice as well. While abridged, this amazing full cast rendition of “The Hobbit” was a thoroughly enjoyable listen, and I highly recommend it. It’s complete with a musical score, sound effects, and Bilbo breaking the fourth wall to talk directly to the audience as if he’s recounting his tale right out of his “there and back again” memoir. I thought it was a neat artistic touch that Bilbo […]

BBC Radio to the Rescue

November 6, 2016 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I have, in my life, attempted to read The Hobbit on three separate occasions. The fourth try was the charm because I gave in to the power of the BBC Radio Drama. As many of you know Ale is working on her thesis about the origins of fantasy, and she is my roommate. What you may not know, is that I retrieve all our library needs, since I’m there every week. My latest pick up for her was the audio version of The Hobbit, and […]

Eowyn is So Metal

November 27, 2015 by Halbs Leave a Comment

This is my third review of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy. You can find my review of Fellowship of the Ring here and The Two Towers here. The Hobbit is here. This review is semi-spoilery in terms of tone of the conclusion of the series, but vague. As previously mentioned in the Two Towers review, one of my favorite things about Tolkien’s series is that stakes are high for everyone involved. The bad guys are bad and a lot of them die, but the […]

“The burned hand teaches best.”

This is is my second review of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series. You can find my review of The Fellowship of the Ring here. But so our path is laid.’ ‘Yes, that’s so,’ said Sam. ‘And we shouldn’t be here at all, if we’d known more about it before we started. But I suppose it’s often that way. The brave things in the old tales and songs, Mr. Frodo: adventures, as I used to call them. I used to think that they were things […]
