Magical Realism Dumplings

Time Loops & Meet Cutes by Jackie Lau

Time loop stories are not my favorite genre so when Jackie Lau announced last year that Time Loops & Meet Cutes would be the title of her next book published by Atria Books, I took note but hadn’t planned on prioritizing it in my reading. Then I was sent an ARC and my curiosity and trust in Lau pushed me to accept it and get reading.   When we meet Noelle Tom, she is an overworked, underpaid, chronically in her own head person who doesn’t have […]

But how do I get from learning his name to getting a kiss so I can possibly break this time-loop curse?

Time Loops and Meet Cutes by Jackie Lau

I started reading Jackie Lau in 2019. While that may not seem like much, but it’s been a long 6 years, and Lau’s books consistently bring me joy. Time Loops and Meet Cutes might be the best book Jackie Lau has written yet. It has classic Jackie Lau elements: an FMC who is all in her head and trying to figure out this curveball life has thrown, complicated family, the glorious food of Toronto, and Lau’s own unique author voice. This is the first book […]

Time loops that feel like fairyland.

The Last Hour at the End of the World (The Echo Archive, #1) by Melissa Caruso

Thanks to NetGalley, Hachette Audio, and Orbit for the ARC. It hasn’t affected the contents of my review. Firstly, this is way more fantasy than it is sci-fi, for those who want the proper expectations. There are time loops and parallel universes, but they function on what feels like magic much more than science. And this is a book with a fantasy heart. Feeling blah right now, so here’s the (truncated) blurb: Kembral Thorne is spending a few hours away from her newborn . . […]

“No point in thinking, you just have to get on with life. We only have one after all, we should try and do our best. We can never get it right, but we must try.”

Life After Life by Kate Atkinson

I will admit that I have been avoiding this book since it was published, but especially after I read a Sherlock fanfic one time* that was a riff on Life After Life, and which is one of the most emotionally traumatizing fics I’ve ever read, so by association I was pre-traumatized by this book. Also, one time I read the first Jackson Brodie mystery and I thought it was boring, so I thought this would be boring too. Happily, wrong on all fronts! *If you […]

Awe thanks. I wasn’t even tempted because it was so bad I had zero urge to read about a twist....

😆 I would've skimmed and peeked and then probably been mad at myself for wasting my time. I admire you!...
