Not what I was looking for

December 31, 2016 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I picked up Friendly Fire (2016) by Marliss Melton because I was craving a story, however unrealistic, about a superman-like, gorgeous guy who could make the world safe and good again. I’ve read a number of Melton’s book in the past and usually enjoyed them. I didn’t dislike Friendly Fire, but I didn’t love it either. It felt like there was very little actual romance in this one, and I didn’t connect to it. Jeremiah “Bullfrog” Winters ends up joining his Seal teammate Tristan on a […]

Free solo–something I’d rather read about than do

December 31, 2016 by Sophia Leave a Comment

It’s been less than two years since I decided on something of a whim to try climbing and ended up joining a climbing gym. It looked like fun, the gym also offered yoga, and I thought it would improve my grip strength. I still rarely venture outside (so far), but rock climbing has become one of my favorite things. So, as I often do with new obsessions or hobbies, I’ve picked up a few books on the subject. Alex Honnold is a world famous climber, […]

What would you do, if you could do it all over again?

December 20, 2016 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Like many of the books I read for my book club, I had not heard of The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August (2014) by Claire North, and I probably would not have chosen it on my own. It didn’t help that the Amazon page said this book was for eight to twelve year-old kids. Fortunately, The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August turned out to be a thought-provoking and entertaining book. Harry August is a special kind of person, which he discovers in his second life. He […]

A sweet surprise

December 17, 2016 by Sophia 4 Comments

I picked up The Hating Game (2016) by Sally Thorne with a little trepidation. After seeing so many glowing reviews on Cannonball, I knew I had to read it. But I was worried I would be the lone person who just doesn’t get it or doesn’t like it. It wouldn’t be the first time that I was lukewarm on a Cannonball romance favorite. I also generally avoid the hate-to-love romances. I enjoy romances when protagonists like each other and work well together. When the protagonists hate […]

McCarthy almost broke me with this one

December 8, 2016 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Cormac McCarthy is an impressive writer, but reading his books often feels like jumping into the middle of a disturbing nightmare. I’ve been reading through his works, but I don’t read any more than one per year for my own sanity. This time it was probably more my state of mind, but Outer Dark (1968) turned out to be one of his more disturbing books. I’m going to take a nice long break before I read another. I think I only have Suttree left now anyway. Outer Dark focuses […]

Not as good as the hockey books

December 4, 2016 by Sophia 6 Comments

I’ve enjoyed Sarina Bowen’s romance stories with hockey-playing college students. I was able to get Coming in From the Cold (2014) for free from Amazon, so even though I’d heard it wasn’t as good, I knew I still wanted to read it. Also, I was going on a short camping trip in November, and I needed something to pass the time during the cold, dark nights. Although I was already reading a book by Cormac McCarthy, I figured I’d much prefer to read something a little […]
