The Sovereignty and Goodness of God: Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson by Mary Rowlandson

"Captivity" by Sherman Alexie

“This book is dedicated to all white people everywhere…Just kidding! The opposite of that! This book is dedicated to our family and friends who experienced all these stories with us…Just kidding, this book is dedicated to El Debarge!” The World Record Book of Racist Stories I normally quote the first line of the book, but here that line is scene-setting and doesn’t say much out of context. So I quote the dedication, and if you haven’t read the first book, you can see what kind […]

Art wasn’t supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something

Flight by Sherman Alexie

December 14, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

I’m pretty sure someone on the Pajiba Facebook group just asked what movie/book/show were you glad you watched but never need to see again? I think Flight may just be that book for me, and I just read it a second time. I think I buried some of the most horrific parts in the memory hole, because re-reading it I had the thought multiple times “oh, so that’s where I read that.” That’s not to say this is a bad book. It’s very good. Requiem […]

Dancing all alone, feeling nothing good

Reservation Blues by Sherman Alexie

September 13, 2020 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is the debut novel by Sherman Alexie, who had already put out a near perfect short story collection: The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven a little earlier. I always think about Alexie as being a very talented writer, but it’s interesting to consider that because his output is varied in terms of type, the over all collective oeuvre is a little harder to assess. This novel begins with the blues musician Robert Johnson making his way onto the Spokane Indian reservation and […]

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

September 23, 2018 by llp Leave a Comment

I bought this book on a camping trip stopover a few years ago. I wanted to read it so badly, but was always waiting for what seemed like the right time; some books are like that for me. It has been sitting in my TBR pile ever since and it finally felt right to read it this last week, a reward for finally finishing a book I really struggled through. It was an excellent reward; I haven’t been this obsessed with finishing a book since […]

Disjointed poetry for a disjointed woman

You Don't Have to Say You Love Me: A Memoir by Sherman Alexie

February 6, 2018 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

“What is it like to be a Spokane Indian without wild salmon? It is like being a Christian if Jesus had never rolled back the stone and risen from his tomb.” I wasn’t a huge fan of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian but I heard such wonderful things about Sherman Alexie’s memoir for his mother that I had to give it a read. It took me a long time to read this one, partly because I kept getting distracted by other things but […]

A portrait of a mother

You Don't Have to Say You Love Me by Sherman Alexie

December 12, 2017 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

This was a sad, beautiful book. If you can listen to the audio version, do so. Alexie mixes poetry in with his narrative, and listening to him sing/recite it in his accent brought a whole new depth to the writing. You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me is a story of Alexie’s mother — 78 essays and 78 poems written after she died at the age of 78. He paints a full, raw portrait of a frankly terrifying woman who loved her family so […]
