The Lost Lights of St Kilda by Elisabeth Gifford

January 22, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

‘I had no idea where we were headed, no idea what lay before us. All I knew was I was ready to travel the length and breadth of France if the world would give me one more chance to spend one more hour with you – to say I’m sorry.’ In 1927, Cambridge student Fred ends up on the remote Scottish island of St Kilda to study the local rock formations and falls in love with Chrissie, a local woman. Thirteen years later, he is […]

Yay for finishing my Bingo card! But mehhhh to this book.

Stranded by Sarah Goodwin

October 30, 2021 by Ellesfena 4 Comments

CBR Bingo: Shelfie (Purchased the e-book–it’s cheap!) Yay! I can’t believe I finished my Bingo card, this is my first time ever doing that! I wish I would have finished on a stronger book, though. Stranded is the story of Maddy, a woman who has been cast on a Survivor-esque reality show where eight people are left on an island for a year to try and survive and build a community. After a couple months of uneasy cooperation, things start to go wrong. If you’ve read Lord […]

More Bertie, Please

Espresso Tales by Alexander McCall Smith

October 18, 2021 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo: Reader’s Choice (replacing the Machinery square) Series: 44 Scotland Street. I read (and reviewed) Book 1 in 2017. What I remembered about this series prior to reading this book: Not very much–I definitely remembered Bruce, the Gaston of the book, who had some underwear-related adventure in the first book that made me laugh out loud although I can’t remember the details any more. And Bertie, the 6 year old whose mother forces him to wear pink pants because she’s trying to raise him […]

Old Series Bingo: Garnethill

Garnethill by Denise Mina

October 4, 2021 by msvreadsbooks Leave a Comment

This is for my OLD SERIES bingo square. TW: Sexual assault survivor story I’ve been waiting a long time to read this book – it was one of the first books I added to my GoodReads list. It’s a murder mystery that takes place in Glasgow, Scotland, which are a few of my favorite things.  Maureen O’Donnell works at a box office in a theater. She doesn’t feel like she has much going on, besides a cute flat in the Garnethill neighborhood and a married […]

A book that feeds the soul…literally and figuratively.

A Scone of Contention by Lucy Burdette

September 10, 2021 by chelz.hawk Leave a Comment

“It’s got to be a strong love for a detective to be married to a slightly unconventional person who has a knack for getting into dangerous situations.” Key West Food critic, Haley Snow and her new husband Nathan Bransford are finally going on their honeymoon. Except their going to Scotland to visit his sister…with his mother…and their neighbor. So it’s definitely not going to be your typical honeymoon. Add in an attempted poisoning and a murder and it gets even more strange. And Haley can’t […]

“The Only Currency More Powerful than Money in this World is the Violence of Man.”

Library of the Dead by T.L. Huchu

July 26, 2021 by Ale 1 Comment

I found the Library of the Dead when searching online for books that were like The Starless Sea.  As always, I got it (for free) out of the library to do a cursory read before committing to purchasing. And while there weren’t that many similarities between Morgenstern’s book and this one, Huchu’s first foray into speculative fiction is a great success. I’d never heard of Huchu before, but I will definitely be checking out his other publications based on how much I enjoyed this read. Edinburgh has […]
