A Love triangle tale of neurotic mind vigilantes

November 29, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

Justine suffers from near-incapacitating hypochondriac whose mother died from a rare disease everyone refused to believe she had. Damn good reason to have health anxieties, I say. She struggles through each day as if it’s her last in case that elusive vein will explode in her brain. But living on edge is almost too much for her hunky, yet simple-minded boyfriend, Cubby. That is until she meets Packard, a mysterious Turkish restaurant owner, who says he can save her hypochondriac self-implosion. Justine (and myself!) is skeptical to say the […]

#10 Sci Fi from months ago, but has still stuck around

November 23, 2014 by Beth Ellen Leave a Comment

Many months ago I read this, and it still has stuck in my head so it must be great, right? I started a classic series in the genre: Foundation by Isaac Asimov. Having read The Caves of Steel the month before I knew that I enjoyed Asimov’s writing style, so it was time to start his opus. This is the first in the Foundation series. It is loosely modeled after the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, of which I’ll be honest I don’t […]

Scully wrote a book!

November 11, 2014 by narfna 7 Comments

Let’s just get this first thing out in the open. For the rest of her life, Gillian Anderson will always first and foremost be Special Agent Dana Scully, FBI. And just so we’re clear, there are definitely worse things she could be associated with. I was totally batshit obsessed with The X-Files back in the day. Like, ad-hoarding-under-the-bed, fanfic-reading, thinking-about-it-all-the-time, staying-up-until-3-AM-on-school-nights-to-watch-re-runs-obsessed*. It was My Show. So, as a caveat for the rest of this review, that lingering love for GA and her X-Files days is […]

I would totally be Erudite, they’re the ones with all the books.

October 22, 2014 by Malin 3 Comments

Beatrice Prior is about to turn sixteen. This is the day when she has to choose which of the five factions in society she wants to belong to for the rest of her life. Beatrice and her brother have been raised in Abnegation, the self sacrificing and selfless people in society. The other four factions are Erudite (the intellectual, who all seem kind of snobby), Amity (the peaceful and apparently the ones who grow all the food), Candor (the honest, they cannot actually lie) and […]

Revisiting a sci-fi classic.

October 13, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

“‘Everything is true,’ he said. ‘Everything anybody has ever thought.’ ‘Will you be all right?’ ‘I’ll be all right,’ he said, and thought, And I’m going to die. Both those are true, too.” Philip K. Dick isn’t an author I’ve had much exposure to. I’ve read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? twice now, and I just finished The Man in the High Castle this weekend. I remember liking Androids when I first read it sometime around 2006. I read it for a Film & […]

This Review Was Written in a Hurry

October 4, 2014 by Berry 9 Comments

My TV-show inspired reread of Outlander confirmed few things I thought I remembered about this book. Namely, that I liked it, but also found it almost silly at times. An enjoyable read, but not a great one. The good: inventive take on time-travel. Great female character in Claire. Historical milieus well realized and intriguing. Jamie. The cheerful abandon with which Gabaldon treats genre conventions. Is it science fiction? Is is romance? Is it supernatural romance? Historical fiction? Who knows? Who cares? It’s all that and […]
