Finally caught up! #CBRBingo

Written In My Own Heart's Blood (Outlander, #8) by Diana Gabaldon

November 27, 2018 by narfna 2 Comments

I liked this one as much as I liked Dragonfly in Amber and Drums of Autumn. A definite improvement over the last several books, although I did enjoy #7 as well, if not quite as much. I’m officially caught up on this series now, and that feels weird! These books are so long, and they’re still not done! Not even going to try and sum up what happened in this book. It was a lot. There was a lot of drama, but unlike in past books, pretty much everything that happened was relevant and non-objectionable (a point in this books […]

At least there’s no GD ghost bear.

A Breath of Snow and Ashes (Outlander #6) by Diana Gabaldon

January 24, 2018 by alwaysanswerb 1 Comment

I sit down to read A Breath of Snow and Ashes over a year after finishing the last Outlander book, A Fiery Cross, which for the uninitiated is literally just a tolerance test for how long a reader can stand the unabridged minutiae of unremarkable 18th century backwoods living, plus a sprinkling of UTTERLY BONKERS NONSENSE to trick them into believing much more is happening than is actually happening. That last sentence should hopefully provide some understanding as to why it took me so long to pick up this one. So I finally do and I’m all like, In short, […]

Long Book is Long

A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon

January 8, 2018 by NoNeinNyet Leave a Comment

This book covers the longest period of time in all of the Outlander books to date and it was noticeable. Despite going on many side adventures all over North Carolina, the Frasers et al are largely based on their land at Fraser’s Ridge in both this book and the one that proceeded it, The Fiery Cross. Because so much time has been spent on the Ridge, a lot of time is spent with its various inhabitants. They’re often not treated as on-going concerns with true throughlines throughout the novel. Instead, Gabaldon picks them up and drops them again as needed so that you […]

Seven novellas, all are good, two are excellent.

Seven Stones to Stand or Fall by Diana Gabaldon

September 12, 2017 by narfna 4 Comments

Seven Stones to Stand or Fall is a 500ish page collection of (mostly) novellas set in Gabaldon’s Outlander universe. All but two of the novellas were previously published in short story anthologies. The remaining two are new. I do not recommend picking up this collection if you aren’t already a fan of the books. Most of the stories would be entertaining enough to read, but you’re not going to get optimal enjoyment out of them without the context of the main series (or the Lord John books, which you should also read, because Lord John is the best). Here is a […]

“If you had the time to lose, an open mind and time to choose.”

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

June 27, 2017 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

I avoided this book for years because I was told it was a romance novel and I have a prejudice against romance novels. Perhaps it was the seemingly endless supply of Harlequin books my mother seemed to devour. The closest I ever got was a minor obsession with V.C. Andrews which take a decidedly darker turn than the average “bodice ripper.” While I’m still not a fan of a straightforward romance novel, I have included books that fall under the “romance” umbrella into my TBR pile. This was the first and mostly like the most hefty in foray into […]

Guys, have any of you ever had an arepa? Please tell me about it in the comments if so. Thank you in advance.

An Echo in the Bone (Outlander, #8) by Diana Gabaldon

December 21, 2016 by narfna 17 Comments

HOKAY SO. I have now made it through seven books of this series, which is basically like twenty-one normal-sized books, or fourteen above average-sized ones. By the time she finally finishes this series, we might be talking Wheel of Time-level word counts here. All this to say I HAVE DONE HARD WORK, NOW GIVE ME TACOS. I was going to type “cookies”, but dammit I really want some tacos right now. Also, on the last Jane the Virgin episode, I was introduced to the concept of the Venezuelan miracle food, the arepa, and I am now obsessed with trying one, […]

The book that would never end.

A Breath of Snow and Ashes (Outlander, #6) by Diana Gabaldon

March 8, 2016 by narfna 6 Comments

This book covers the adventures of the extended Fraser-McKenzie clan through the years 1772-1776, and oh God, you feel every one of them. I picked up this book in late August 2015. I just finished it last week. For those of you as bad at math as I am, that is NINE MONTHS. I coulda grown a whole baby in the time it took me to read this book. If I was a cat, maybe dozens of babies. A rabbit . . . at least a hundred. (If I was an elephant I would still be pregnant.) According to Goodreads, it […]
