“Your mother thinks ‘The Exorcist’ is a comedy.”

The Night Eaters, Vol. 1: She Eats the Night by Marjorie M. Liu, Sana Takeda

The Night Eaters, Vol. 2: Her Little Reapers by Marjorie M. Liu, Sana Takeda

Fair warning: this review is about a trilogy, and I’m only reviewing the first two books. The third book is not out yet, and the second book ended in a way that made me go, “No, I need book three now!” The copy of Volume 2 that I have indicates that Volume 3 is coming in fall 2024, but sadly, it is now set to be released in spring 2025. The Night Eaters comes from the same creative team behind the comic series Monstress. I’ve […]

Oh how funny! Mom just ate someone’s body part.

The Night Eaters: Volume One: She Eats the Night by Marjorie M. Liu

January 9, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This weekend I devoured several titles. I was finally in the mood to read and the goodies I found were easy enough to read, even if they had a lot going on. And in fact, most of them deserve a second read (at least) as there was a lot going on and things probably were missed. And The Night Eaters: Volume One: She Eats the Night was one of the most-going-onest graphic novels I have read. This Marjorie M. Liu graphic novel is not for […]

Monstress Vol 1 by Marjorie Liu

This book took me ten months to finish (double bingo)

Monstress, vol 1: The Awakening by Marjorie M. Liu and Sana Takeda

November 9, 2022 by Malin Leave a Comment

CBR14 Bingo: Monster (there are several monsters in this story, both humanoid and not) Official book description: Set in an alternate matriarchal 1900’s Asia, in a richly imagined world of art deco-inflected steampunk, MONSTRESS tells the story of a teenage girl who is struggling to survive the trauma of war, and who shares a mysterious psychic link with a monster of tremendous power, a connection that will transform them both and make them the target of both human and otherworldly powers. So total honesty here. […]

East and west style and story blended together for one bada$$ read

Monstress Volume 1: Awaking by Marjorie M. Liu

October 1, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do you like gut wrenching, WTF was that crazy ride reading? Do you like your science fiction and reality mixed? Or a mixing of a historic feel and magic at every turn? Then give Monstress Volume 1: Awaking by Marjorie M. Liu a try. I stole these pieces of reviews from Good Reads: This book is “Asian inspired/art deco/classic steampunk horror/high fantasy/talking cats’ graphic novel.”  “The art is dark and lovely.” And, “stellar manga nouveau artwork.” Sana Takeda is in the top ten of my […]

Bloody, beautiful Monstress

March 12, 2018 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

I adored the first volume of Marjorie Liu’s Monstress. Sana Takeda’s art is one of the most stunning that I’ve come across in a comic. At the same time, it’s also unbelievably violent and brutal. I find this pairing somewhat evocative of the Hannibal TV series, which I also loved. (I don’t know what this says about me – that I am ok with gore, provided it’s beautifully presented?) Monstress is set an alternative, matriarchal, steampunk Asia, which is inhabited by humans, anthropomorphic animal gods […]

Going to give this series one more chance, and then I’m out.

November 2, 2017 by narfna 6 Comments

I feel like this series is just getting more confusing the longer it goes, and I am less and less interested. It also continues to be overly bleak with no humor at all to lighten it up. The art continues to be gorgeous. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me. It’s been a couple of months (I think) between actually reading it and writing this review, but I seem to recall a pirate ship adventure, and nobody trusting Maika at all, and the monster inside […]
