Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell

This is a ridiculous book that I loved very much. Also, because I have low spoons at the moment and also because I couldn’t do better, here is the blurb: Shesheshen has made a mistake fatal to all monsters: she’s fallen in love. Shesheshen is a shapeshifter, who happily resides as an amorphous lump at the bottom of a ruined manor. When her rest is interrupted by hunters intent on murdering her, she constructs a body from the remains of past meals: a metal chain […]

“That was what it meant to have power, wasn’t it? You could simply destroy that which didn’t serve you.”

Seven Faceless Saints by M.K. Lobb

CBR16 Bingo: Rage – Roz and her friends rage against the machine, trying to make a change in the very workings of their city-state. In a city-state where there is a sharp class divide between those blessed by the saints and those without magic, ex-lovers Roz and Damian must work together to uncover the identity of a ritual murderer. I don’t read as much fantasy as I used to nowadays – certainly I don’t read much YA fantasy anymore, especially from authors I am unfamiliar […]

“I can love you. I can grieve for you, or with you. I can share your pain. But I cannot judge you.”

Cordelia's Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold

CBR16 Bingo: Détente (Cordelia and Aral start out as enemies and end up married) Official book summary (read this in early May): In her first trial by fire, Cordelia Naismith captained a throwaway ship of the Betan Expeditionary Force on a mission to destroy an enemy armada. Discovering deception within deception, treachery within treachery, she was forced into a separate peace with her chief opponent, Lord Aral Vorkosigan – he who was called “The Butcher of Komarr” – and would consequently become an outcast on […]

This one’s for the bisexuals.

With Love, From Cold World by Alicia Thompson

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 4 Book 18/30 Alicia Thompson is reliably smart and funny in all her romance books, and her characters have such heart. The setting in this one is also really fun: a tourist attraction in or near Orlando called Cold World, where it is winter all year long. Both of our main characters work there—Asa for over ten years (he’s been there since his family kicked him out for being bisexual), and Lauren for just over two (she is the […]

“Not everyone in our acquaintance needs to be murdered, Veronica. In fact, some people find it preferable to make friends with normal folk.”

A Grave Robbery by Deanna Raybourn

This is book 9 in an ongoing series, and as such, not the best place to start. Start with A Curious Beginning. Official plot summary (because it’s been too long since I read the book): Lord Rosemorran has purchased a wax figure of a beautiful reclining woman and asks Stoker to incorporate a clockwork mechanism to give the Rosemorran Collection its own Sleeping Beauty in the style of Madame Tussaud’s. But when Stoker goes to cut the mannequin open to insert the mechanism, he makes […]

The Fox Wife: A Novel by Yangsze Choo

by 3 Comments

Cbr16bingo Smash mystery/fantasy/romance = MysterFantsyMance The Fox Wife is a beautiful novel that combines mystery, fantasy and romance, and even some history. Set in China and Japan in the early 20th century, its main characters deal with the pangs of first love, lost love, obsessive love, and the loss of children against a backdrop of revolution and a world in the grip of major change. Author Yangsze Choo writes at the end of this story about her personal interest in the fox legends of China […]
