The Sins of the Fathers

May 14, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Ask and thou shalt receive! In my review for the previous novel, When God Dies,  I stated that I was looking forward to a more straight forward tale of murder that didn’t involve political intrigues, and this one more than delivered! Additionally, little did I know, but Harris was actually setting up this novel in the last novel.  In When Gods Die, Lovejoy mentions a young nobleman who was found mutilated in the park, and while I suspected that somehow it would tie in with […]

Welsh Legends, Murder and a Useless Regent

May 14, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

It’s been about four months since Sebastian St. Cyr solved the murder case of the previous novel, and while he declined Sir Henry Lovejoy’s request to assist with further murder cases involving the upper classes, he soon finds himself wrapped up in another investigation when a dead body is found in the bedroom of the Prince Regent.  The House of Hanover already has popularity issues between the mad King, a violent son and the Prince Regent’s spending habits.  Adding the ability to get away with […]

A Murder Mystery Set at the Beginning of the Regency

May 14, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

After Sebastian St. Cyr is arrested for a murder he didn’t commit, and blamed for another potential death, he escapes from custody, and decides the only way to not be executed for murder or spend his life on the run is to clear his name by investigating the murder himself.  Fortunately, he worked in intelligence during his time in the Army while fighting Napoleon, so he has skill set that actually comes in handy for this type of investigation. It is 1811, and the murder […]

Pride and Prejudice and Practical Magic

January 12, 2017 by Emperor Cupcake 5 Comments

When I first discovered historical fantasy (or mannerpunk, or whatever you want to call it), I felt the way I imagine a person does when stumbling upon a hitherto unknown sexual kink. Oh wow, I did not know this was a thing, but I LIKE it! Marissa Doyle’s debut novel, Bewitching Season, is a light and frothy confection that (if I’m being honest) wasn’t quite as good as I remember it. This book and its sequel, both published in 2009, follow the stories of the […]

Better than Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

August 17, 2016 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

It’s 1812 in England, and Lady Helen Wrexhall is a young woman of means, about to be presented to the Queen and come out into society. The night of the Queen’s ball, she meets Lord Carlston, a disgraced nobleman who finagles his way into her life so he can drop a bombshell: England is infiltrated by a group of terrifying beings (Amazon calls them demons, but I dunno, I feel weird calling them that) who feed off all the negative parts of society, surviving by […]

What a delightful little book.

April 10, 2016 by narfna 2 Comments

This sneaky little book is a sneaking sneakster. It sneaks right up on you, and you love it before you realize what’s happening. I actually read this book way before I meant to. I realized on my drive to Phoenix a couple of weeks ago that I was quickly going to run out of Pride and Prejudice audiobook, and I didn’t have a replacement on deck. Good old public library and OneClickDigital had this puppy featured, and I wanted to read it anyway, so why […]
