Did I go off on a little bit of a tangent? Yes. But was I wrong…?

What Happened to You by James Catchpole

Love Makes A Family by Sophie Beer

Kindness Makes Us Stronger by Sophie Beer

April 22, 2021 by NTE Leave a Comment

When I think about the kids we’re raising, as a whole right now, I’m so goddamn hopeful for the future that I can’t even really express it, for fear of losing my “unaffected internet witch” cool points (Note: I do not actually have any of those points). But it’s true: I have been a part of raising the children in my life for 25-ish years now, and – as the aunt of two adult niblings, a couple of teenage ones, and a handful of under […]

The reviews I forgot to post, part 3!

The Fate of Fausto by Oliver Jeffers

December 30, 2020 by crystalclear 1 Comment

I love Oliver Jeffers as an author.  I was excited to read this new picture book.  But man, this is DARK!   Fausto is a man who sets off to prove that he is the boss and that everything belongs to him.  He conquers a flower, and a sheep, and a tree.  But that is not enough.  He goes after a field, and a lake, and a mountain, and they all eventually give in.  But the sea, the sea is a different matter.  The sea […]

The Mac Barnett & Jon Klassen Show

The Wolf, The Duck & The Mouse by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen

Triangle by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen

Square by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen

Circle by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen

May 7, 2019 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

I picked up these three Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen books because I’m a big fan of I Want My Hat Back (Jon Klassen) and wanted to check out his other stuff.  I also got my nephew a copy of Sam and Dave Dig a Big Hole (Barnett and Klassen) for Christmas.  All of these have something that’s a bit off from normal children’s books. Maybe the kids don’t notice them, but the adults sure do.     (Also, this review features all of the […]

Books about books

Otto the Book Bear by Katie Cleminson

A Child of Books by Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston

March 27, 2019 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

A Child of Books By Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston   This isn’t just a picture book.  It’s a work of art! There is so much packed into these few pages.  The story is simple. A child of books (real or imagined, we don’t quite know, and it doesn’t really matter) is introducing a boy to her world.  I could definitely see this being made into a short film, but the problem with that would be people constantly pausing to read what was on the […]

The results of raiding the library where I now work

Bedtime is Canceled by Cece Meng

Help! We Need a Title! by Hervé Tullet

March 26, 2019 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

I work in the Youth Services department of a library now, so I can totally take out picture books for “work” and no one thinks twice about it!  It’s actually my job now! So I’ve been going through my TBR list for picture books and seeing what they’re all about. I probably won’t actually use either of these for work, not because they aren’t good, but because aren’t suited for my ages for storytime.    Bedtime is Canceled By Cece Meng, Illustrated by Aurélie Neyret […]

A delightful journey to the past

The Bravest Knight by Mercer Mayer

November 7, 2018 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

This was the third book I picked up at my library’s wine tasting in my drunken haze.  I chose it because it looks adorable. Indeed, the illustrations are absolutely lovely with a lot of attention to detail.  Mercer Mayer obviously put a lot of thought into every page, and probably some research, too. We have a little boy who is playing pretend in his backyard.  He’s imagining that he’s living 1,000 years ago as the squire for “the bravest knight in the kingdom.”  This kingdom […]
