Hey on the last day of the month, it finally snowed in New York! Huzzah! Dead Wind**** I can’t talk about why I like this book without even the mildest of spoilers if you’ve been following the series. So I’ll talk about what I appreciate. I’ve been in an on-and-off reading slump the last two months. It’s been hard to finish stuff. Tessa Wegert’s Shana Merchant series really feels like the exception to the rule. I like her writing, her pacing, her protagonist. All good. One […]

The End of The World As We Know It

Tabloid City by Pete Hamill

September 29, 2020 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Pete Hamill, who recently passed away, was a legendary New York City newspaper man and columnist, so he’s on solid ground in this novel. Tabloid City covers the hectic final publication day of the fictional New York World newspaper, beginning with a late night breaking news story requiring special coverage. “Murder at a good address” as the book puts it, always sells papers. The murder in question is especially difficult for Editor in Chief Sam Briscoe since one of the victims is a woman he’s […]

Devil's Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three by Mara Leveritt

September 14, 2020 by Jake 1 Comment

Knocked out two books this past weekend, one fiction, the other non-fiction, both somewhat relating to the supernatural. Forever 3 stars Considered by no less than Lawrence Block to be the great New York City novel, I knew I had to grit my teeth through Forever after failing twice before, especially considering the recent death of its author, Pete Hamill. And while I don’t like it nearly as much as Block, I’m glad I did. Hamill is a good writer; I’ve already added another of his books to […]

Snow in August by Pete Hamill

March 19, 2015 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Up front: it’s really hard for me to discuss this book without at least alluding to the ending, because that was the only part I really didn’t like. That being said, I didn’t like it because it was unexpected in a very jarring way, so maybe if I’d had it slightly spoiled for me, I could have been prepared for a major tonal shift and liked it more. Not sure. But maybe skip this review if you don’t want anything spoiled. Snow in August takes place […]
