Though It All Comes Together, Still Felt Like Too Much Story in One Heist Novel

The Palace Job by Patrick Weekes

December 21, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I’m not sure if it’s been me this year or the novels I’ve picked but I’ve had a lot of novels that have been good/fine without being blown away by too many of them.  This one also fell strongly in the “it’s alright” category for me even though I know others quite loved it. The basic plot description is that Lock, the main character, wants to steal a priceless manuscript from an important political leader – since it once belonged to her family who died […]

Like Firefly, if Zoe was the Captain

September 6, 2018 by Debcapsfan 2 Comments

I got the audio book for The Palace Job because of fun reviews from emmalita and lowercasesee. Sometimes I think the more fun part of the Cannonball is reading reviews to get new books to read. The only problem with listening to the audio book is you have to look up all the spellings for the fantasy names. The Palace Job is about a rag-tag group of misfits who plan to rob Archvoyant Silestin (a competent and formidable bad guy…hooray!). There’s a war between the […]

Capers are better with magic

July 22, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

After The Prophecy Con was just The Palace Job, rebooted, The Paladin Caper manages to be something new and aaaaaah I love it. I fully recognize that I love these books more than they truly deserve but I don’t care because they are FUN goddammit and sometimes that’s all you need. The OMG cliffhanger at the end of the last book is pretty predictably resolved and I’m okay with it. You won’t be mad either, trust me. This is of course another book in which our trusty crew […]

The Reward For a Job Well Done Is More Work

June 11, 2018 by Emmalita 1 Comment

Despite my good intentions, The Prophecy Con jumped the line ahead of Kindred. For a while there, it was the only book I was reading that wasn’t ripping at my soul. At the end of The Palace Job, it seems like the everything is tied neatly in a bow. The bad guy is ousted, his plan is thwarted, the city and the Republic are safe, the Unicorn is going to get her virgin, and all of the Rogues have had their records expunged and been forgiven […]

Book 1, Take 2

May 29, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

Lesbehonest, this one is so much just The Palace Job with a new cover. For goodness sakes, our ragtag gang of intrepid adventurers is going after the exact same magical McGuffin. But I’m going to let him get away with it because the romp is just so much gosh darned fun. I do struggle a bit with remembering where the previous book ends and this one begins but that’s okay. We’re back with Loch and co and war can only be avoided if she can steal […]

Fortune Favors the Brave, Though Statistics Favor the Cautious

May 28, 2018 by Emmalita 3 Comments

The Palace Job has been recommended by a friend a couple of times, and I happened to catch lowercasecee’s review just before I started reading it. It is like a magical Ocean’s Eleven, but lighter on the testosterone and heavier on the diversity. It’s a great heist novel with daring escapes, a bringing together of the crew, setbacks and secret identities. My non-Cannonballing friend sold it to me as the start of an adventurous series with great characters and engaging writing. One book in and […]
