Bones is the literal undead and drinks blood, but even he’s better than Christian Grey

The Other Side of the Grave by Jeaniene Frost

July 4, 2022 by Malin 1 Comment

Back in 2007, Jeaniene Frost published the first volume in her paranormal fantasy series Night Huntress, Halfway to the Grave, about half-vampire Catherine “Cat” Crawfield (the unlikely offspring of a vampire and a human), who hunts vampires because her mother has raised her to hate them, and since Cat has never really felt loved or accepted by her mother or grandparents, hopes that her crusade to end as many undead as possible will earn her family’s affection. Cat runs into English master vampire Crispin “Bones” […]

“I can’t give you the white picket fence, and if I did, you’d set it on fire.”

Magic Bleeds (Kate Daniels, #4) by Ilona Andrews

April 27, 2022 by narfna 4 Comments

The conflict in this one had some serious stakes, and the bad guys were seriously creepy/scary. The authors pair that really well with the relationship conflict Curran and Kate are having. This is probably the most action-packed of the books so far (and *action* packed, cough wink). The book opens with Kate being stood up on her first date with Curran. She doesn’t take it well and things go downhill from there. A standard call for help to a bar outside town turns into a […]

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.”

The Book of Life (All Souls Trilogy, #3) by Deborah Harkness

January 11, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I can point out so many flaws but at the end of the day I read this 561 page book very fast and I did, I enjoyed myself. My rational brain is going, “Stop! She’s too powerful! This villain is made of cardboard! This is wish-fulfillment! He’s so possessive, and how convenient it’s coded into his genes!!! This is CHEESY AS HELL. They are CODEPENDENT.” Meanwhile, the part of my brain that just makes noises and wants to grab things that are soft is making […]

Honey Badger Don’t Care

Breaking Badger by Shelly Laurenston

December 14, 2021 by Malin 1 Comment

Disclaimer! This was an ARC from Netgalley. It has in no way influenced my review.   This is the fourth book in an ongoing series. While this book works on its own, it will be much more enjoyable if you’ve read the first three books in the Honey Badger Chronicles, which start with Hot and Badgered. While the first three books in the Honey Badger Chronicles introduce us to the three MacKilligan sisters Charlie, Stevie, and Max who have different mothers but the same utterly […]

When Sorrows Come by Seanan McGuire

CBR13 Bingo: Flora (there are a number of trees in the background and Toby appears to be holding a rose in her left hand. She also has a belt of roses on her dress) Spoiler warning! This is book 15 (!) in the ongoing October Daye series. So very much not the place to start. There will be spoilers for previous books in the series in this review, although I shall try to avoid any big ones for the contents of this current book. Rosemary […]

“I brought you a cow once, remember? And I killed that chimera for you in fifth year.”

Any Way the Wind Blows by Rainbow Rowell

September 22, 2021 by Malin 3 Comments

CBR Bingo: People Spoiler warning! This is book 3 in a trilogy, which wraps up a number of very important threads left dangling after the previous book. So after the brief plot summary, there WILL be spoilers in the review. If you are new to the wonderful world of Simon Snow (and Baz, and Penny and Agatha), the place to start is Carry On. This book starts pretty much immediately after our fearsome foursome (and Shepard)’s return from America to England. Simon, still in emotional […]
