If Rube Goldberg had written humorous novels…

Cocktail Time by P.G. Wodehouse

Cbr13bingo Libations, Bingo #5 (Diagonal) I love PG Wodehouse novels, especially the Bertie Wooster/Jeeves series, but this story featuring Uncle Fred, aka Lord Ickenham, is almost as hilarious and entertaining as the Bertie and Jeeves books. Lord Ickenham, in his 50s I think, is the sort of man who knows how to stir up trouble and then orchestrate events so as to calm the afflicted and afflict the calm. In true Wodehouse fashion, there are a number of plots (mostly involving money and love) that […]

“Good old blackmail! You just can’t beat it.”

The Code of the Woosters by P.G. Wodehouse

September 8, 2018 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

#cbr10bingo #ThrowbackThursday FYI if you are looking to fill in a #Birthday square on your card, Wodehouse’s birthdate is 10/15 (same as mine!) Back in my junior high/high school days, my sister worked at a bookstore and among the treasures she brought home were P.G. Wodehouse’s Jeeves and Wooster novels. I could not get enough of them, and I thoroughly enjoyed the British TV series from the 1990s starring Hugh Laurie as Bertie Wooster and Stephen Fry as Jeeves.  Even now when I reread these […]

A Time Traveler’s Homage to Jerome K. Jerome

To Say Nothing of the Dog or How We Found the Bishop's Bird Stump at Last by Connie Willis

August 3, 2014 by ElCicco 3 Comments

If you are a fan of Jerome K. Jerome’s Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog) or PG Wodehouse’s Jeeves novels, this novel is sure to please. Willis is a well known and “decorated” sci-fi author, having won multiple Nebula and Hugo Awards. She discovered JKJ through reading Robert Heinlein and gives him a tip of the hat in an amusing, clever and thoughtful work that combines time travel, mystery, and comedy of manners. It’s 2057 London and Ned Henry, an […]

Sally, I loved you ’til the end, but I still like you

The Adventures of Sally by P.G. Wodehouse

January 12, 2014 by Sophia 1 Comment

On my second try reading Walden by Thoreau, I made it about a 1/4 of the way before giving up and desperately perusing my Kindle for anything else to read. That’s when I started reading The Adventures of Sally (1921) by P.G. Wodehouse. The Adventures of Sally was a book I’d picked up shortly after buying my Kindle, when I discovered the large number of free classics available on Amazon. I’d never heard of P.G. Wodehouse before but he had positive reviews and it’s hard […]
