You’re a cold-hearted snake…

Be the Serpent by Seanan McGuire

CBR14 Bingo: Series (this is book 17 in an ongoing series, do NOT start here). Could easily also have used this book for Snake and New.  Spoiler warning! This is book 17 in the series. It’s impossible to review the book without referring to events in earlier books, so if you want to remain completely unspoiled, skip this one. I’ll try to avoid any big spoilers for this book. October “Toby” Daye not only survived her wedding, but so did her husband, Tybalt, King of Cats, and all […]

Oh Look—It’s a Payoff!

Be the Serpent by Seanan McGuire

Same disclaimer as per usual; if you are reading a review of a long-running series—and Be the Serpent is entry number 16—you know what to expect spoiler-wise. I’ll try not to mention too much in this book, but the others are all fair game.  Another thing with long running book series is that there is a lot of potential for very long plot arcs. While most books in the October Daye series have a little surprise or two, there was something set up in A […]

Get me to the church (or whatever location the fae get married) on time

When Sorrows Come by Seanan McGuire

CBR13 Bingo: Flora (there are a number of trees in the background and Toby appears to be holding a rose in her left hand. She also has a belt of roses on her dress) Spoiler warning! This is book 15 (!) in the ongoing October Daye series. So very much not the place to start. There will be spoilers for previous books in the series in this review, although I shall try to avoid any big ones for the contents of this current book. Rosemary […]

When Sorrows Came by Seanan McGuire

It’s an annual thing now, isn’t it? Me announcing a new disclaimer for reviews in the October Daye series: There will be some spoilers. It can’t be helped. You’ve all been warned multiple tiles now, so you all probably know the risk So it comes to the event that we have all been waiting for: in When Sorrows Came, our protagonist is getting married! Finally! I thought with all the drama seen in the last few books of the series, Toby and Tybalt were never […]

Doomed to be a hero

An Artificial Night by Seanan McGuire

by Leave a Comment

Things get pretty dark in the third October Daye novel by Seanan McGuire, An Artificial Night. October aka Toby is a fae changeling living in San Francisco. She moonlights as a detective but officially serves as a knight to the Duke of Shadowed Hills, the nearby fae kingdom. The book opens with her best friend’s son being stolen away in the night and the daughter left in a mysterious coma. Toby feels a magical residue but is completely stumped. Before she can get a grip […]

Another faerie murder mystery for October Daye

A Local Habitation by Seanan McGuire

by Leave a Comment

A Local Habitation by Seanan McGuire is the second book in the October Daye series. I reviewed Rosemary and Rue for CBR11, so it’s only natural I pick the series back up for CBR 12. This novel finds the changeling Toby stumbling upon an unexpected murder mystery in Silicon Valley. As his knight, Toby can’t refuse a request from Sylvester, the Duke of Shadowed Hills. His kingdom is the faerie land closest to San Francisco. He wants her to check on his niece, January. She […]
