Multiple personality disorder as a superpower.

January 2, 2015 by narfna 2 Comments

Stephen Leeds is a truly unique individual. There are forty-seven people (and counting) living in his house, each of whom specialize in different things, like botany, biology, security, psychology, handwriting analysis, etc. These people have personalities and talents and fears and all come from different cultures and religious backgrounds. And all of them are hallucinations. Stephen doesn’t really have multiple personality disorder, because he is completely aware of and actively participates in the maintaining of his aspects. He uses them as a sort of extension […]

A Holiday Romance Collection

December 27, 2014 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I’ve got another holiday related collection for you, this time instead of holiday short stories its holiday romance novellas. The Season for Love is a collection of three Shannon Stacey works all tied (loosely) around the holiday season. In another review of Ms. Stacey’s works I’ve commended her ability to ground her characters in the real world, while still letting them play in Romance Novel Land ™. That is still true, and perhaps why when looking for something to download onto my nook before flying […]

The Winds of Marble Arch: Personal Correspondence and Travel Guides

May 14, 2014 by kimberleybear Leave a Comment

Quick Synopsis: The second and third parts of the short story collection, dealing with letters and travel. Quick Review: Another four stories, two in each section. Newsletter was the standout of Personal Correspondence, a funny take on the traditional holiday newsletter. Nonstop to Portales was my favorite of Travel Guides. Read the full review here.

The Winds of Marble Arch: Weather Reports

May 14, 2014 by kimberleybear Leave a Comment

Quick Synopsis: The first set of stories in Connie Willis’s massive collection of novellas and short stories, all dealing with weather or natural phenomena Quick Review: Four short stories, ranging from the fallout of the Blitz to the explosion of the sun. Daisy in the Sun was probably the standout for me of these. Read the full review here

The Emperor’s New Groove

April 10, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

So I bought a new bookmark right before I started this, but I never even used it once. Just read this sucker straight through. What is this guy’s brain. Honestly, I’m trying to think of a reason NOT to give this five stars, and I can’t? Help. It really and truly does not compute in my head how Brandon Sanderson is able to keep inventing these really awesome, really well thought out magic systems, and on top of all that, still give us great characters, […]

The Return of the Dunk, The Revenge of the Egg

January 25, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

NOTE: As with the first two in the series, I read The Mystery Knight as part of an anthology. In this case, it was Warriors, edited by George R.R. Martin himself along with some dude named Gardner Dozois, who I’ve never heard of before. Unlike with the other two anthologies, Warriors for the most part consists of original fiction by authors that is not tied in to their previous works. This means little fear of spoilers, so I’m going to read it and do a […]
