The scariest thing of all is never knowing what you’re suddenly going to believe.

Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman

August 6, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Like badkittyuno, the book didn’t quite gel for me at first. I liked the bits of Caden’s normal life, but found myself drudging through the rest to get back to those. I could tell right away that something was off about Caden, as he was convinced some random kid he didn’t even know was going to kill him, and I assumed the other sequences would be revealed to be somehow tied to reality, that they were a glimpse into how his head actually works… but it didn’t […]

I don’t think I’ve ever positively reviewed a book I haven’t finished, but this here’s going to be the first. Because I’m the kind of person who can’t rewatch the Scott’s Tots episode of The Office, and who cringes just thinking about that one scene in On His Way to the Wedding (by Julia Quinn: Spoiler for a Bridgerton book ahead) when Gregory professes his love in front of all of London, and … it does not go well.  I just sometimes get to a point […]

The Arc of a Scythe was a welcome surprise

Scythe by Neal Shusterman

Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman

The Toll by Neal Shusterman

This trilogy was of those surprise!sci-fi books I’ve mentioned in a previous review. I had exactly zero idea what exactly the book was about when I picked it up. I was doing Whatever-you-want-a-thon in June, and reading one of the hosts favourites gave extra points. As I had previously got this on Audible, I decided to give it a try and I absolutely loved it. So here we go with bulk reviews. Each book review will contain spoilers for the previous book, but I’ll try […]

Scythe by Neal Shusterman

March 18, 2020 by Rachel Leave a Comment

Oh look! It’s another young adult trilogy set in a near-perfect future alternative United States! How perfect for me. Scythe is an awesome first entry in a new to me trilogy from Neal Shusterman. We are dropped into a future world where all diseases, accidents, and aging is no longer an issue. When people get too old, they basically press a button and become young again. All of society is controlled by the benevolent “cloud” which is an omnipresent internet collection that we are told […]

Vacation Reading

All I Did Was Shoot My Man by Walter Mosley

Scythe by Neal Shusterman

The Last Place You Look by Kristen Lepionka

The Big Blowdown by George Pelecanos

Pickup At Union Station by Gary Reilly

February 22, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

I got some great reading done while I was on vacation this past week. No knockouts but a nice range of good-to-good-enough books. Didn’t have time or resources to catalogue each individually so I’ll do small reviews of every book here. All I Did Was Shoot My Man I continue to be pleasantly mystified by Walter Mosley’s Leonid McGill series. These books are so odd, so transgressive considering what else is out there. He clearly has a gift for this kind of writing. The plot […]

That rare beast, a great final book.

The Toll (Arc of a Scythe, #3) by Neal Shusterman

December 30, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

That was a really good ending. I am incredibly satisfied by it. It did what my favorite endings do, which is to manage to surprise me with things that feel inevitable. I am going to hold off on the five stars, after sleeping on it. I’m not quite sure why, though. Maybe when I do an eventual re-read (I most definitely need to, to see the whole arc), I’ll up it to five stars, which I will confess was my first instinct. I don’t really […]
