it was a mistake to not have the second one of these queued up

The Obelisk Gate by N.K. Jemisin

June 4, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Without that twist from the first book–and without having another large twist in this one, which would end up feeling a bit gimmicky–it’s inevitable that this second entry in the The Broken Earth series would be a bit anticlimactic in comparison. And true to form, it sort of is. My hopes that the second person narration would fade away didn’t happen, but the second person narrator (driven by the character’s growing knowledge) does get more omniscient such that it’s less frustrating to read, and at times feels […]

finally got around to reading this one, very worthwhile

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

June 4, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

So first, a story about this book from way back in…2017? 2018, maybe. I’m in the middle of interviewing for a new job, and am close to the end of the final day of interviews. The interviewer happens to know my former boss and so we were vibing, sharing stories. He proceeds to ask me what I do for fun, signalling that the interview is almost up. No problemo, I think, time to pull out the ol’ standby–I read, I say, I’m a reader. What’s […]

A magical love letter to NYC

The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin

June 3, 2022 by Mobius_Walker Leave a Comment

New York City has been born as a great city of the world and she has chosen her avatar. This happens from time to time as enough people and ideas coalesce in one spot. It happened to Rio de Janerio, to Hong Kong, to London, and many more. And now it’s happening to New York. Except this time, one single person is not embodying the entire city like has always been the case. Instead there is an additional avatar for each of the five boroughs […]

Confirming Jemisin belongs on my must-read list

Killing Moon by N.K. Jemisin

March 24, 2022 by Bothari43 2 Comments

I loooooved the Broken Earth trilogy, but did not love The City We Became, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I picked up the first in Jemisin’s Dreamblood ‘duology.’ I am happy to report that it’s great. I think I just prefer my fantasy novels to be wholly fantastic, with none of that pesky real-world crossover. I much prefer the fictional (but loosely based on ancient Egypt) Gujaareh over New York City. Gujaareh is a city steeped in religion and its accompanying […]

Magic City, Magic Boroughs

The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin

February 12, 2022 by Jake Leave a Comment

If you love New York City, as I do, you’ll love this book as much as I did (my favorite read of 2022 so far by far). Let’s just start there. Like author N.K. Jemisin, I’m an NYC transplant, even if she had more experience visiting it in her youth than I did. Like her, I came with an understanding and expectation of what I thought the city was and was going to be for me. And, according to the afterword, I learned and changed […]

A city that comes alive

The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin

December 26, 2021 by teresaelectro 2 Comments

The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin is a unique science fiction novel that brings cities to life. When a city becomes “great” a human inhabitant becomes its avatar. Except at the start of this novel, the homeless Black boy is chased into hiding. Enter the awakening of the human avatars of each of the five boroughs. The book follows each avatar as they discover their connection to the city. There is a mysterious entity that doesn’t want the city to fully become a great […]
