The Obsession Continues

January 16, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 2 Comments

You know a book is good when you immediately purchase the next one in the series. I had NO chill after reading A Study in Scarlet Women and found myself on Audible clicking the buy button just a few minutes later. Sherry Thomas is a genius y’all. Also, she seems to be pretty prolific which, let’s just say it’s a good thing because if I have to wait more than a year to read the next book, I might actually die of anticipation. A Conspiracy […]

Say hello to my new obsession

January 15, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 6 Comments

This was the Sherlock Holmes reimagining I never knew I wanted and never thought I needed. There are so many adaptations in the last decade that it’s hard to keep track, but this one might be my favorite? Sherry Thomas took the originals and put the most marvelous spin on the characters and their situations. Just a little warning, the beginning of the book took some time to build into the meat of the story, but looking back on it, I think it was worth […]

Beukes is breaking her readers again

January 15, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 2 Comments

I’ve read several Lauren Beukes books over the last few years and I’ve loved each of them. This is definitely the darkest I’ve read of hers. Maybe also one of the darkest books I’ve ever read to be honest. I thought it was going to be more on the mystery side of genre fiction, but it turns out it was really more on the horror side. The thing about Beukes is that no matter what she’s writing about, it’s going to be good because she […]

To quote Kesha, this place’s about to blow

January 9, 2018 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I’ve been looking forward to reading this book for a while and it did not disappoint. Especially for a debut novel, it’s a very well put together story. I’m a bit retroactively disappointed that it didn’t win the Goodreads choice awards, but I suppose that’s to be expected. Aaron Falk is a Federal Agent working for Australia’s government, ferreting out financial criminals. He doesn’t live the most exciting life, but he’s comfortable and good at his job. When he gets called back to his hometown […]

Forensic science of the whole person.

January 8, 2018 by Leedock Leave a Comment

I had a revelation after reading this book. In mystery novels, the problem that needs to be solved is never as interesting to me as the problem solvers. Winspear’s first in her “Maisie Dobbs” series splits problem and problem solver in a way that made that clear to me.  Is that common? I’m pretty sure that is why, when asked if I enjoy mystery novels, I generally say no, but my read list  on Goodreads tells a different tale.   Maisie Dobbs is the only child […]

Worth the Weight

January 6, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I saw this book on a display in a Blackwell’s in Edinburgh, Scotland. It looked interesting, but it was large-ish hard cover book, and I didn’t want the extra weight in backpack. The problem was that I discovered this book was not available in the US at the time. So on my last day in town, I went back to the store and thankfully there was a copy left. It was worth the trouble. Rotherweird is at its core a supernatural mystery. It’s told from […]

I really enjoyed this one. I was particularly amused at Lady Catherine deBoutgh’s disgust at her assassin’s incompetence.
