Ahead of the Curve

3.5 stars. Attica Locke is simply the best. I really wish I hadn’t read The Cutting Season first though. It’s always hard evaluating an author’s other work fairly when you know they’re capable of the absolute best. If a book is better than most, but not quite living up to their best work, how do you rate that? My gut response is to rate a sense of disappointment. Taking a few weeks to write this review, I’ve come around to appreciating this book for what […]

Lots of Lies

March 27, 2018 by Melina Leave a Comment

When Will leaves for a conference in Orlando and a plane heading towards Seattle goes down, his wife Iris feels badly for her students, friends and colleagues who might’ve known someone on the flight. She does her best as a school counselor to help everyone she can.  However, when she gets the call her that her husband has died on that flight and that there was no conference scheduled in Orlando, what she knows about her husband and what the truth is are two very […]

An OK read but I recommend checking out Bobby Dollar instead

March 27, 2018 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

With cigarette smoke rising from under a fedora, the murky cityscape in the background, and the scarlet feathered wings, The cover of Something More than Night screams angelic noir mystery. From 2012 to 2014 I read Tad William’s excellent Bobby Dollar trilogy that kicks off with The Dirty Streets of Heaven.  Bobby Dollar is the nickname of the angel Doloriel and the series is a mash up of noir mystery, urban fantasy, and angels.  Something More than Night came out in 2013, the same year as the second Bobby Dollar […]

I still love Flavia, but I don’t know if that’s enough anymore.

March 21, 2018 by narfna 2 Comments

Sigh. When is the right time to give up a long-running series? Last I heard there were only going to be nine books in the series, but this is book nine, and no end in sight*? I’m just not enjoying them like I used to. Which is weird, because I still love Flavia, her family and friends and assorted hangers-on. But the mysteries and plots just don’t do it for me anymore. I find myself having a really hard time keeping my attention on them. […]

The Collector

March 19, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

First this book is due in August 2018, but please go to your Independent bookstore and preorder! Second, this book has a lot of holes in it for the adult reader such as stereotypical characters, too many coincidences and characters maybe not as contemporary as one is used to. However, this might explain why it reminded me of books I loved as a kid (about age 8 to 10). It has a classic feel. Third, despite all that, I do recommend this book to the […]

“I often think we should have tattooed on the back of whatever hand we use to shoot or write, ‘I might be wrong.”

March 13, 2018 by narfna 4 Comments

I still really like this series, but I was a bit more lukewarm over this book than I wanted to be. Let’s split it up into good and not-so-good. First, good: The mystery in this one was interesting. CC de Poitiers is a wannabe lifestyle guru who has recently moved to Three Pines with her husband and child, whom she disliked and ignored. Her relationship with Crie, her overweight fourteen year old daughter, is downright emotionally abusive. She is seen as cruel by everybody who […]

I really enjoyed this one. I was particularly amused at Lady Catherine deBoutgh’s disgust at her assassin’s incompetence.
