Ship Happens by Mason Deaver

And . . . you were brave enough to let me go.

Ship Happens by Mason Deaver

One of the reasons I love romance novels is that there are infinite ways to tell a story. Ship Happens is a second chance romance, and as such, it looks at whether the initial breakup was a good choice, what has happened to the characters since they broke up, and whether, if they get back together, can they make it work? The way Deaver explores those questions feels fresh, and not because Owen and Jacob are trans men. Owen fell in love with his best […]

I do love the cover of this book, especially paired with the title. It makes me laugh.

The Feeling of Falling in Love by Mason Deaver

This was a cute story and well written, but I didn’t connect to it emotionally as much as I did with Deaver’s first book, I Wish You All the Best. Deaver still plays with themes of gender nonconformity and coming of age while queer and discovering your sexuality and gender identity, but their main character is a much more difficult and complicated person (read: kind of an asshole). This is also a romance, though as with their first book, the main character’s emotional growth is […]

Lovely YA book about coming out as nonbinary.

I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver

This was so good! I knew it would be. Too many of my GR friends whose opinions on books I usually align with loved it. I definitely wasn’t expecting to become so angry while reading the first several chapters that I could literally feel in my face that my blood pressure was rising, and the corners of my vision went sort of black. This poor child. All the poor children. What the fuck, parents, what the actual fuck is wrong with you. Oh my god, […]

“I’m just wondering what the point is.” “Well, that’s the real question, isn’t it?”

I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver

This book centers on a non-binary person, and a lot of the book felt…instructional. But in a good way. It seemed to speak directly to me: this is how you handle a situation like this. This is how you respond when a person says this to you. This is what to do to be an ally. I don’t know how it would come across to someone who is non-binary, but as a cisgender woman who wants to be supportive in any way possible, I found a […]

Read this, it’s Important

I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver

June 22, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I have to admit I was a little surprised to see a Pride display at the local Barnes and Noble that still had a copy of I Wish You All The Best. Also for the record, I really dislike the use of the word “important” to designate something genuinely meaningful that everyone should seek out, but this might be one of those titles which actually deserves that term in that sense. If you can’t imagine the struggle of someone who wants to come out but […]
