Lucy Parker is another beneficiary of the Courtney Milan rule: the lesser of hers is still the better of most

February 27, 2018 by alwaysanswerb 2 Comments

Disclaimer: I received this ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. 3.5 stars Lucy Parker’s Act Like It and Pretty Face were a spectacularly good debut and follow-up from a new author, that both guaranteed I’d read anything she delivers. Her London Celebrities series is, generally, a clever setting for a series of romances, with the West End theater scene primed to offer drama from classic artistic temperaments, professional-romantic entanglements, tabloid interference, the world being a little too small, and so on. We’re […]

Happiness is reading a good romance months before the actual release date

February 26, 2018 by Malin 4 Comments

Disclaimer! This was an ARC granted to me through NetGalley. It has in no way influenced my review.  Beatrix “Trix” Lane may be tiny, but she also used to be fierce and confident and very ambitious. Until her former boyfriend pretty much broke her down entirely and left her a pale shadow of herself. Now that the star of the fancy acrobatic West End show she’s in has been possibly permanently damaged after a fall, Trix has a chance at the lead role, but she’s […]

One of my favorites

December 15, 2017 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Pretty Face (2017) is another delightful romance by Lucy Parker that takes place in the theater district of London. Lily Lamprey is a young television actress who is known for her luscious curves and breathy voice. She wants to make the jump to the stage, but is hampered by her voice and previous acting experience. That is, until Luc Savage, a successful and notorious director casts her as one of the lead roles in his new play. There is an undeniable and unsurprising spark between the […]

Love in a London Theater

December 11, 2017 by Sophia 2 Comments

I’m definitely reading Lucy Parker’s next book as soon as it comes out (hopefully soon). Act Like It (2015) was the first book I read by Parker, after seeing it recommended on Cannonball. I’ve since read her second novel and certainly look forward to more. It’s not particularly earth shattering in any way, but it’s well-written, fun, and emotional–better than most of the romances I’ve read lately. “Almost every night, between nine and ten past, Lainie Graham passionately kissed her ex-boyfriend. She was then gruesomely dead by […]

Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Beautiful

December 9, 2017 by Lynn 2 Comments

From the author of Act Like It comes another Cannonball favorite, Pretty Face. And while, if I remember right, Pretty Face wasn’t as strongly loved as Act Like It, I definitely enjoyed it more. Act Like It was just okay in my book; this one gets an additional two stars. Grumpy director Luc Savage is reviving a classic West End theatre, and needs a new star. Enter Lily Lamprey, clearly the best actress for the job, even if she doesn’t have the resume. Lily is […]

Gimme the next one now, please!

November 29, 2017 by narfna 7 Comments

I read this book in one sitting. I was just so in the mood for a good romance novel, one that hit on the expected tropes but didn’t fall into the expected mistakes books in this genre often do. Clichéd experiences abound here, but the characters are round and fully realized, and their interactions feel real. It’s like the best of both worlds. Your id gets its pleasure quota filled, while your rational mind gets characters who act like adults and actually communicate with one […]
