The Spy Zoo

The Secret Hours by Mick Herron

September 25, 2024 by Jake Leave a Comment

I picked up this book because it wasn’t supposed to be connected to the Slow Horses series. But I’ve read in other places that it might be? I don’t know, use your own judgment if you want to avoid the most minute of spoilers. Some writers are like exercising: you just have to push through the initial strain in order to get the good stuff. I hate exercising but I can’t think of a better example. I’ve tried Slow Horses several times and I can’t focus on Herron’s style. […]

Sleep: London Love Book 4 by Sophia Soames

Even though my stomach was churning, I felt in some kind of control, like I could still steer this situation home, dock it gently in a place where I could walk away unscathed. The problem was, I didn’t think I wanted to walk away unscathed. I wanted to hurt and bleed and heal and scream.” ― Sophia Soames, Sleep CBR16 Bingo: Dreams We met Mabel in Taste: London Love book 2. Mark and Mabel work as a team at The Clouds Westminster Hotel in central […]

“If you are going to tell a lie, tell a good one”

Transcription by Kate Atkinson

Juliet is in her early twenties when World War II starts, and like so many girls and women her age she finds herself working for MI5. This sounds more exciting than it is; mostly, Juliet types things. One day she is ordered to join a mission in a small flat in London, where an agent named Godfrey Tobey ingratiates himself with Nazi sympathisers.  I haven’t read the blurb at the back but I imagine it continues with something about Juliet not knowing what she’s getting […]

The Heart Trumps the Head

Never Wager with a Wallflower by Virginia Heath

June 1, 2024 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Venus and Galahad have never really gotten along, but when he buys the buildings next to the orphanage she works at intending to turn them into a gambling hall, their sparring begins to look a lot more like attraction and respect. This is the third book in the Merriwell Sisters, which follows a trio of sisters who must make their own way in the world after being abandoned by their ne’er-do-well father. I haven’t read the first two books, but this worked well as a […]

10 Things That Never Happened by Alexis Hall

May 30, 2024 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

We spend a good few minutes wrangling with nachos. To be honest, they’re a good fit for the very unusual occasion of two people who are blatantly into each other having a meal where they have to pretend they aren’t. They’re not so messy it’s embarrassing, they require just enough cooperation that you’ve got to interact, but not so much it gets sexy. ― Alexis Hall, 10 Things That Never Happened “Worst comes to absolute worst, I’ll just arrange to get whacked on the head […]
