And they lived happily ever after

December 12, 2017 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Sometimes I crave romance novels. Whether it’s because I’ve read too much serious literature and non-fiction or I just need the escapism, the best thing to do is curl up with a romantic novel as soon as possible. I’m pretty sure that’s what happened with Midnight Angel (1995) by Lisa Kleypas. Feeling the need for some romantic distraction, I got on the library website, looked up Lisa Kleypas–because she’s a good, reliable author–and picked a book that was available. Tasia, a young Russian heiress. is about to […]

A courtesan with amnesia

July 16, 2017 by Malin Leave a Comment

Grant Morgan is one of the most famous and sought after of London’s Bow Street Runners. He’s made a substantial fortune solving crimes for the wealthy, but is starting to find his life a bit boring. When he’s called to the banks of the Thames to identify what appears to be a strangled woman, he is first of all surprised to discover that she is still breathing, and secondly, by her identity. The half-dead woman is Vivien Duvall, London’s most desirable courtesan. Once she wakes […]

Rounding Out the Hathaways with My Favorite One and A Good One

June 20, 2017 by faintingviolet 3 Comments

The Hathaways series by Lisa Kleypas was supposed to be my “read during the year” romance series for 2017. Five books spaced out over 12 months would give me something to look forward to and get some classic Kleypas under my belt. But then I read book three, Tempt Me at Twilight and realized that book four took place immediately thereafter and decided why bother savoring? Give me all the books right now. I am so glad I did, and it is probably why I’ve […]

Revisiting a classic I had seriously forgotten every aspect of – also, Cannonball

May 26, 2017 by Malin 15 Comments

Sara Fielding and Derek Craven have a hell of a “meet-cute”. While researching her future novel in one of the seedier corners of the East End, Sara comes across Craven being held down and attacked by two thugs. They’ve slashed his face open, and she intends only to fire a warning shot from her pistol (which sh obviously keeps in her reticule for defencive purposes), when she instead ends up killing one of the assailants. She discovers that the man whose life she saved is […]

The plot of this book pretty much has everything…and then some

May 23, 2017 by Malin 3 Comments

Miss Wilhelmina “Lily” Lawson, also known in much of London as “Lawless Lily” is estranged from her family, but has been able to live independently due to a large inheritance from an eccentric aunt. When she’s not shocking society with her wild antics, she’s known to keep company with notorious gambling hell owner Derek Craven, and the most popular rumour is that she is his mistress. When Lily is visited by an old family friend, Zachary, Lord Stamford, she discovers that her gentle younger sister […]

Skip One, Read the Other, Discover Flirting Via Clockworks

May 17, 2017 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

Summary: Kleypas’ has the goods but Seduce Me at Sunrise is a two star book that someone who is not a completist could easily avoid and Tempt Me at Twilight is five star awesomeness. Actual review: I was told, repeatedly, not to read Seduce Me at Sunrise, otherwise known as the Win and Merripen book. I swear I was listening, but then someone mentioned that there were several Amelia and Cam scenes in the book worth seeking out. So… I checked it out along with the […]
