trigger warning for hysterics

The World Record Book of Racist Stories by Amber Ruffin & Lacey Lamar

April 19, 2023 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

What to do when you have a best selling book? Write a sequel, of course, and this time invite the whole family to join in! Amber and Lacey continue their two woman charm offensive on America, in a delightful book that will almost certainly be read by well-intentioned progressives to reassure themselves that they aren’t like racist racist. Just the normal amount of racism that’s fed to all of us through our participation in white supremacy via living in America as a product of the capitalist hamster […]

I Mean … Yikes

The World Record Book of Racist Stories by Amber Ruffin & Lacey Lamar

November 24, 2022 by ASKReviews 1 Comment

Best for: Everyone, but I mean, white folks do really need to give it a read. In a nutshell: This is a follow-up to Ruffin and Lamar’s previous book, You’ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey. Worth quoting: “That’s why a lot of white people act the way they do: they have a five year old’s understanding of the word ‘racist.’” Why I chose it: I wanted to read their first book but haven’t been able to find an audio version in the UK. Thankfully […]

A funny book about racism — get the audio if you can!

You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey: Crazy Stories About Racism by Amber Ruffin & Lacey Lamar

October 25, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

A good time, despite the subject matter. Amber and Lacey make hearing stories about racism simultaneously entertaining and infuriating. Laughing while angry! The best example of what this book does is probably the story that they open it with, for good reason. It involves Lacey being at a store and paying with a check (back when people did that). The cashier was a white teenager. Lacey had checks with famous and historically notable Black people on them. When she pulled out her checkbook the check […]

Can racism be funny?

You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey: Crazy Stories about Racism by Amber Ruffin, Lacey Lamar

No. It can’t. But Amber Ruffin gets dangerously close… You’ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey: Crazy Stories about Racism by Amber Ruffin and Lacey Lamarr 5 Stars I adore Amber Ruffin. I want to be her friend. She is hilarious; her skits on The Late Show with Seth Myers are perfection and her episodes of Drunk History are pure serotonin. She could have published her grocery list and I would have rushed to read it but instead she published this hilarious memoir with her sister who […]

I Would Pay Money For a Book About the Family Ruffin

You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey: Crazy Stories about Racism by Amber Ruffin, Lacey Lamar

You know the #1 thing I learnt from this book, something which has confused me greatly for very long? “Heaux” is a fancy(?) way of saying hoe/ho! I always read it and thought “beaux” which, as you can imagine, gives a whole different meaning to many situations. Thanks, Amber! JK that’s not what this book is about at all. This book is about Racism, with a capital R, but through the medium of comedy, specifically the comedy of Amber Ruffin, human delight we do not […]
