My Kentucky Moonlight School by Kim Michele Richardson

November 20, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My Kentucky Moonlight School is another book (read via an online reader) due in August 2026 but is a must to talk about now. Kim Michele Richardson’s story is about a family, their community and how they learn to read during “Moonlight sessions” of schooling. It is sweet, educational and even a little humorous at times.  This is enhanced by Chloe M. Giroux who illustrates the adventures of this family with earthy tones, bright shading and light use, and just the right amount of details. […]

A beautiful portrait of a white outsider in 1930s Great Depression Kentucky

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson

February 26, 2021 by Mobius_Walker 2 Comments

Cussy Mary is a book woman for her tiny hill country town in rural Kentucky. She packs up books, magazines, and newspapers donated from major metropolitan cities and takes them to her patrons on her route as a part of the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression. She is largely well-liked and respected for the work she does and the opportunities she brings to an often ignored community through education and reading. She’s also blue. Not metaphorically sad and down. She has blue skin […]

You had me, then you lost me, a case of book whiplash

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson

January 18, 2021 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This is the January pick of my local library book club, that I was a regular participant of pre-covid. During the pandemic times, I have attended only one book club because Zoom book club for me doesn’t give me the same jollies. I read the book, the meeting is this week, will I attend? Only time will tell. The cover of this book had me arching an eyebrow and assuming it was “not for me” in that it looked more like a summer beach read, […]

Haven’t Heard of the Blue People of Kentucky? Me Neither.

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson My rating: 4 of 5 stars This book was not on my radar until my library book club chose it so we could all read it digitally and discuss it via video conference. I’m thankful for a library that has invested in digital media so while we are all sheltering in place and maintaining social distancing, we can still keep up the practice of reading and discussing books. The book is set in eastern Kentucky […]
