I think the book should have been about Ben or Radar instead

July 13, 2015 by Malin 2 Comments

Quentin “Q” Jacobsen is a fairly average, if overly anxious teenager. He has lived next door to Margo Roth Spiegelman for most of his life, and been in love with her for as long as he can remember. Margo is one of the most popular girls in school, has a nearly legendary reputation. Of course, she also barely seems to know that Quentin or his friends Ben and Radar exist, but that doesn’t stop Quentin from dreaming of her from afar. So when Margo climbs […]

Not quite sure the 19 Katherines were necessary, but I liked the book regardless.

So this is my least favorite John Green book so far, but the thing about that is that saying “least favorite” in this context is about like saying, “Oh, that chocolate ice cream with the peanut butter swirls really just pales in comparison to the mint-chocolate chip and the Cherry Garcia over there.” You give me the fucking ice cream right now and I will shove it in my face. Nominally, An Abundance of Katherines is about a former child prodigy named Colin who has […]

Manic Pixie Paper Girl

June 28, 2015 by bonnie Leave a Comment

I have a feeling that I am not the World’s Greatest John Green Fan. I liked The Fault in Our Stars, but I didn’t *love* it. I enjoyed Will Grayson, Will Grayson immensely, but that’s a co-creation with David Levithan. I almost didn’t finish Paper Towns, because I found it really, really hard to connect with as a novel. I am glad I stuck with it and finished, though I am definitely not going to line up in theaters to see the movie. Paper Towns […]

If we could pick, then I’d pick you…

May 11, 2015 by Lynn Leave a Comment

Will Grayson, will grayson is a Cannonball favorite, so I’m going to skip the summary and dive right in, because I have lots and lots of thoughts about this book. It’s the kind of story that when I was done with it, I needed to call up someone and talk about it right away, but felt like maybe I was overreacting just a smidge, because after all, it’s impossible to fall in love with Tiny Cooper, because he isn’t real. And that, my friends, is […]

A Dot on the Map…

May 11, 2015 by Lynn 3 Comments

My first John Green novel was Looking for Alaska, and I loved it. I follow him on Facebook (he’s delightfully goofy), and with all the buzz surrounding Paper Towns being made in to a movie, I figured I should give it a read. Plus, I was reading Father and Son, which is fantastic but very, very dark, and I needed a little bit of light for a couple of days, and I knew I could count on Green to give it to me. Quentin (Q) […]

I’m a sucker for a fabulous musical.

You guys, I was totally unprepared for this book. Like every other human, I had read The Fault in Our Stars and thought it was pretty good. Then I tried reading more John Green, and got Paper Towns. AND I HATED IT SO, SO MUCH. And that was the end of my John Green experiment. As for David Levithan, my only experience was his short story in My True Love Gave to Me. And I loathed that one. I didn’t have high hopes for this […]
